I am travelling on holiday and am already overseas
I tried to put a sim bought here in my phone byt it seems the phone is locked with optus
I bought the unlocking code from Optus just now but i cant proceed to unlock beyond the first step itself
I dialled the hash # number given on its site and pressed dial but nothing happens
(* had bought the phone for my son 3-4 years back and didnt remember that it was a locked phone.)
Travelling but phone is locked with Optus

Just buy a cheap phone while you're there
The description of what you have done sounds a little bit odd, so just to clarify the process -
If you have given Optus the correct IMEI number of the phone (after dialling *#06# which you would have been told to do if uncertain) and have the correct unlock code, then with the other-carrier SIM in the phone, as mentioned above, you should have been presented with a specific unlock keypad screen - like the phone dialler, but different. After entering all the code numbers (the screen will indicate the specific number of digits required), pressing the key directly below the 9 key should then unlock your phone.
It is possible that you have received the wrong code, for one reason or another, if that process doesn't work.
I reckon it's an iPhone. If it is you must plug it into a computer and restore it to unlock.
Depends on the model of phone
if its an old Nokia the # number needs to be entered with NO SIM in the phone
try that… see how u goWill check and get back
would help by mentioning what type of phone
The phone should be able to be unlocked regardless of where you are.
You must unlock the phone with a non-Optus SIM card in the phone.
Have you tried this? Perhaps try unlocking the phone again. Optus should provide the correct code and instructions for your handset.
