Please Help Me with My Wi-Fi!

Hi,

I have just got the NBN installed, and the box is in my garage. I live in a concrete 2 storey townhouse and need wifi at the back of the house on the top storey. I have looked into EoP but there are separate circuits for the 2 storeys. I have an older tp-link n300 router I am using which is giving me some coverage (around 80% speed) directly above the router on the next storey up.

Should I be looking at a new routers with 'more range'? Should I look at putting an access point where I can get the best range upstairs? Should i be looking into directional aerials for my current router? I am unable to run cable between the 2 floors..

Any help/advice/experience appreciated.

  • In your townhouse are you attached at both sides? Also, is the reason you can't run cable between the 2 floors due to internal construction?
If you are not joined on both side do you have an option to run conduit on an outside wall. Whilst it may look like an expensive (but not very expensive really) now you would not regret it in the long run - there's not much point in being able to avail of NBN and have below average internal comms.
Directional antennae have a lot of limitations. Without going into it too much if you have near end obstructions, e.g., concrete walls, you're facing a very big challenge no matter how much you are willing to spend.
Let me know - there's always a solution.

    • There is no option to run cables outside, both sides are shared walls.

The NBN installers mentioned there was a box with some cat 6 cable just above where he installed the nbn box. I think it may be for the internal coms (we have a phone to access the gate/speaker. I havent investigated this but it is going to be my best bet right? I was hoping there was a wireless solution but the floor between the levels is solid concrete.

  • Just buy an access point, some ethernet cable and cable trunking. Run some conduits along the walls or skirting.
Ubiquiti Unifi UAP-AC-Lite for a $125 dollars or so should do a pretty good job of covering not just the top floor but also the entire home.

    • Being a rental i am not too keen on drilling and I haven't found an easy way to get cable from the garage into the house.

  • When you say "the box is in my garage"

Do you mean this sort of thing?

Wireless isn't going to work. Wired might work

Where are the 2 circuits? You could possibly double up on the EoP.

    • yes, but I only have one box. Haven't really figured out the power circuits, there are 3 rcd's and the upstairs and garage are definitely separate. There is not great access between floors if they are on separate circuits but I could run cable up the void near the stairs pretty neatly. What do you mean wireless wont work and wired might?

      • yes, but I only have one box.

Can you take a photo of what you do have?

Where is your router? i.e the black netgear box in the photo I posted above.

What do you mean wireless won't work and wired might?

Wireless and concrete floors won't work well.

Without a floor plan it is very difficult to understand your house layout but from what I understand

        Floor 1 is the garage
Floor 2 is where your kitchen and living areas is

        Is there a floor 3?

If you can run a long cat 6 cable from your garage up the stairs to a power point nearby.

Then use EoP to plug that in and put the other EoP with a WAP somewhere in your main living area. (Maybe near your desk?)

1 box inside, 1 box outside, and in the 3rd pic, the window upstairs on the left if the living area where most of the devices are. There are 2 bedrooms downstairs also, one of which i play xbox in so a good connection there would be good too! Internal walls are plasterboard too.

I have moved the router in the garage onto the auto garage door opener and seem to be getting a good signal upstairs, 40mbps according to speedtest!
