How to Keep a Deal Active ?

Hi,

Very new here … and have read the guidelines but not sure if there is any legal way of boosting a deal that I have made so that it is not lost (do they become stale after a few days)? Is there a paid advertising option or just a single post for any deal allowed?

I posted it Monday and it expires this Sunday. Thanks Bruce

There is no way to bump it up yourself, if the deal you posted is deemed to be of great value to the community it will be voted up and stay on the front page longer.

If your deal is a bit meh, the discount or product you're offering isn't that great, it will eventually just disappear thick into the pages.

  • As said, can't bump posts.
Might take time but you need to find something that will get the vote count higher. And I don't know if your product is really what people are chasing here to be honest.

  • Thank you for the information … always helps to ask the members.

We have relatively thin margins so a 20% discount across the range is massive. Our newsletter does 15% weekly but only on a few items, so I thought we would trial this for new customers - but you never know how many people on a site buy treats .. just thought it was worth trying as we noticed a few other big companies have been doing it over the years.

    Cheers b

When you post a deal you choose a start and finish date for that deal.

I'd leave it a couple of weeks and try and re-work your deal and make it look a lot cleaner. Perhaps try and find 1 or 2 products that are a lot cheaper than super markets and make an easy to read deal that shows this?

  • these products are priced to be as close to or the actual cheapest online, let alone supermarkets. Supermarkets tend not to do a lot of FULL meat based treats beside liver and maybe beef jerky.

We could post only a few for another deal at maybe 25% but we try not to lose too much money on any deal we make. We just read comments on other company deals in here and it seemed people wanted the freedom to select anything in the range rather than be limited by a select few things we could super discount. That is the point of the weekly coupon newsletter we have anyway.

I am happy to hear any other suggestions about what deals work best in here. We don't get major courier discounts for postage so a big discount AND free postage would guarantee losses for us. The point of this deal was to let people know that sites like ours exist - that its not always the biggest companies with the biggest advertising that have the best product or deals.

We were looking at putting very simple text up for the offer - but realised that without the conditions to spell out exactly the terms that people might feel they were getting ripped off - we are not scammers, we are here for the long haul.

    • Definitely understand with your site people probably like a x% off code but if you look around, unless you're a large known site, they don't tend to get bumped to the front page. People begin to realise that these deals come around often for some stores so tend not to find it a bargain.

Everyone here loves local stores and will support them if economical.

My suggestions is to let them know it's tailored just for OzBargain as this alone usually increases the amount of +'s you can get. I would suggest keeping the T&Cs on your site and just giving the basic need to know info on the deal.

I imagine it's new customers you are after so perhaps you could do a special OzB sampler of the most popular items at a price that doesn't send you broke. You could still market it as the high quality it is but a "Find which healthy/quality snack your dog loves the most!" or "x weeks of treats".

Just my thoughts… All the best with it!

      • Hi Zappy,

Yes this is just an ozbargain special so I will go back and edit that into the offer (though its probably too late since its slipped way off the page.

I have read some pretty harsh comments for a well known pet store that seems to do it every 2 weeks, suggesting that their margins must be pretty good. I would support my local stores where i live if they werent 30% higher than my products (the reason I started sourcing my own).

I dont have an extensive T&C list on my site, because our sales process is very simple and we havent had complaints to require it - again I was just following another companies offer template on here, but trying to make it more transparent and less restrictive.

"special OzB sampler of the most popular items at a price that doesn't send you broke."

Someone else suggested that - I just thought from comments that everyone expected you to give the whole shop away and postage free etc etc. I already have a SPECIALS category on my site of popular treats - so perhaps I might discount that section on here another time ..

Thank you for all the great ideas - will take them on board.

There is no way to bump it up but yes if your bargain is good it goes well. You can also check front page bargains for ideas.

  • I think you should also look at the shipping cost. Some of the items you sell I can find for roughly the same price with the 20% discount at my local pet store. When you add on shipping, it makes it cost extra to purchase it through your store.
The items I'm referring to being able to get cheaper locally are the black dog products.

      Hi Hoota,

Yes I have found some general pet stores will dump dog treats (loss leader prices) to bring you in to buy dog beds and other big ticket items. i know the prices I am getting the product for and my margins, and some massive stores might be getting it cheaper. I have checked general online prices and I know my prices are low. And that half my stock is 100% jerkies (my own brand) that a lot of stores don't even sell in the sizes I do. I can imagine that I am not the cheapest in every product, because I want to stay in business, but I also know that with 20% the vast majority of my range will be cheaper than the vast majority of Australian stores online or retail. I wont beat companies that own the abattoir and wholesale chain too … but I know I am as competitive as I can get, and this is why I am still in business.

The other point that people want to know is that I have fresh product and maximum personal service. Sometimes its not purely about price ..
