Amaysim Data Billing Sessions: Per KB or Per MB?

Hey guys

I ported over to Amaysim during the three month Groupon deal, which is about to expire.

I've noticed they state per KB billing in their support pages;

https://www.amaysim.com.au/help-support/billing-and-payments…

Upon checking my actual usage in my account, there are multiple 1MB sessions, and everything else seems to be rounded up to the nearest MB.

Am I alone in this?

This has massively increased the amount of data I've 'used' as opposed to what my handset reports I've consumed.

I've tried live chatting three times today, and after being put in a long queue, it just times out and I get booted, so I've given up there.

Along with the decrease from 30 day billing periods to 28 days, I think I'll have to give Amaysim the boot myself.

Wondering what others thoughts are here.

    Amaysim bills data per KB.

Send them an email instead, or try giving them a call.

    • Yeah I've sent them an email, will wait for their response.

  • I just checked my bill and it's all rounded up to nearest MB.

Wonder if this is new. Do update us with the email.

    • Will do, I believe it said 48 hours for a response.

      Definitely MB billing for me.

There was a period a few days ago where I had multiple 1MB sessions over an hour mostly just minutes apart.

My phone reports I've consumed 3.7GB the past 30 days, yet Amaysim report 6.8GB for just the last 25. Massive difference.

      • AYG billing of infrequently used tab SIM, below, an indication that data-use is likely calculated accurately, to the KB. Going back sees in-pack as yours - 'rounded' to the MB, but almost certainly just for simplicity in display.

Entirely normal for multiple data-sessions in an hour, if no background data exchanged for some reason, which keeps 'a session' open. Handshake/socket connection with the network closes after about 10 minutes after last exchange of any data.

Stock Android counter not what it once was and doesn't measure uploads (see Play Store), in any case. You have a significant data-use discrepancy relative to your data counter, regardless, but may have particular apps uploading a lot of data in the background. I will just presume that you have already scrutinised the apps on your device - stock and otherwise, for their data-usage, and have disabled various access/service (location, etc.) where feasible or sensible.

If that is in fact the problem, this thread may open your eyes to where at least some of your data is going -

        http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/40446/why-is-andr…

        • Hey Tas, not disputing the fact there can be multiple sessions in an hour, just noticed I have multiple sessions minutes apart at 1MB, as in 3-5 mins at times. That seemed out of the ordinary to me, and what potentially could have been 1KB of data transferred (hard to know) may have been rounded up to 1MB.

I'm using Windows 10 Mobile in this case so I'm not sure of any issues with the internal data counter.

        • @jase_h: Network data drop-outs can see multiple billing increments recorded, separated by just a small number of minutes. A few /several an hour without seeming external cause, not unusual on Optus in my experience.

If Amaysim get back to you with anything, I think that they will confirm rounding of data as not the problem that you're facing, despite the way they choose to display in-pack usage.

If background-data is the problem, or at least part of it, this forum thread might point you in the right direction re the settings on your phone to be careful with.

          @Tas:

Thanks for the links. Can't see anything that applies to me just yet. OneDrive is the biggest consumer but the usage doesn't seem to show how much of the data is over the network and how much was over WIFI.

          Appreciate the help.

  • Appears measured in / rounded to the KB - at least is for me. Itemised on bill per session in MB or part thereof.

A 10GB pack expired the other day and I am using up remaining credit on AYG. 7.2c/MB. Billing from yesterday all looks in order and includes -

    3.61MB/$0.26
    0.13MB/$0.01
    0.04MB/$0.00
    0.69MB/$0.05
    0.44MB/$0.03
    0.01MB/$0.00
    2.66MB/$0.19

  • Only 4G phones get billed per KB. If you have a 3G phone, you get billed per MB, so even if you only use a few KBs, it is always rounded up to a full MB. This is stated in the T&C.

    • I'm using a Lumia 640 on the 4G network, which could be dropping back to 3G at times.

Even so that would be at odds with what is stated in the support pages, no differentiation between 3G/4G mentioned.

      • Is none. When 4G access through Amaysim began, for a couple of months Amaysim gave people a choice of enabling 4G w/KB billing on their accounts (+ 7.2c/MB AYG overrun/rates), or staying on just 3G enabled w/MB billing/rounding (& old 5c/MB AYG rates). Then everyone was transitioned, whether they liked it or not. If any misrecalling (is that a word - feels wrong) of that is reflected anywhere in current T's & C's, I'll certainly be very surprised, but will stand corrected.

        • Ok just to be clear, I joined in Feb this year. I'm 4G enabled. Data is advised as 7.2c/MB or $9.90/GB in my account. Can't even see an option to change it to 5c/MB AYG.

So I guess I would expect it to be per KB billing based on that?

        • @jase_h: The price rose to 7.2c/MB when 4G arrived. Unfortunately you can't opt for 3G only for cheaper AYG data anymore. I stayed on as long as I could as my phone then was 3G. As Tas said, no more choice, so uniform billing.

        • @greenpossum:

Thanks for clearing that up. All good, I'm not interested in moving to that option anyway, just trying to pin down why data is being billed per MB rather than per KB as Amaysim state.

  • Why struggle under a confusion with the whole nomenclature of stuff.<>
bytes, ..kilobytes, gigabytes. Those can be just Mega bytes,(fractions, & multiples thereof ) anyway, for the time being.

that you pays on aggregate MB's. there's that.. .

    • Not fully understanding your paragraph there… just trying to work which method is being used to bill the data.

Tas may be right and it could be an issue with displaying my usage the correct way rather than billing.

Will find out when Amaysim reply.

Not fully understanding your paragraph there…

        That's an easy one!

My Dad used to love doing cryptic crosswords and I continue to hold firm in my belief that daver writes those for a living! :-)

      • "Itemised on bill per session in MB or part thereof." in the way Tas demonstrated, will be correct.

Mea culpa for the misplaced comment.

I have once only used an amaysim's unlimited/5 GB Sim where it was sharply discounted. Not a great fan of session or in-pack stats where 4.00MB may cloak a real figure say 3.61MB, or even being misread as ((MB(deprecated) vs KB)) chargeable units (now sensibly all uniform).
