Why is Kogan's HK iPhone SE stock more expensive than Apple's local stock?

Just browsing eBay today and came across a so-called deal.

Kogan:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-iPhone-SE-16GB-Gold-/162032…

Apple:
http://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-se

How is it that Apple is $679 (including shipping, etc) and Kogan is $701 (including shipping and generic charger, as it comes with a HK charger). Kogan's website (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/apple-iphone-se-16gb-gold-apple…) has the device for $679 too, shipping not included and costs $22 to my location, likely flat-rate as it makes the end price match eBay's.

Why are people buying this stock, unless they used the eBay 15% off? Furthermore, why is Kogan not selling local stock if they are the exact same price. Hell, they could sell local stock and ship it cheaper but they're probably just absorbing more profit by sending grey imports and charging the same as local, if not MORE when you include shipping.

Welcome to the free market where vendors don't try and give customers the best price they can in fact they attempt to do the exact opposite.

Whilst manipulating you into believing they're doing the former.

Because Kogan is breaking the law and falselsy advertising that they have a 51% off sale (Ended yesterday), when in fact iPhone and Apple Watch prices went up during the sale.

They were fined 32,000$ for this once before. I'm submitting a complaint to the ACCC about it tonight. You should too.

    • 2 things before you do.

I think it was 15% off not 51% off
Also the 15% off was an allowance made by eBay not Kogan. Kogan was just one of the stores that the eBay offer applied to.

Good luck with ACCC but I think they maybe ok

      • Pretty sure arrive stores (DSE?) received large fingers from the ACCC for exactly this behaviour during eBay sales

      • Yeah typo, obviously 15. Also they were fined for it last time so I don't see why they wouldn't be fined for it this time. On Ebay even: https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/kogan-pays-32400-penal…

        • Go ahead as I said, but you have to understand that this complaint is different. In the one that they got fined for, they advertised you would save 20%. In this case its eBay who is advertising that you save 15% off the eBay price, not Kogan.

I am not a lawyer (and they get it wrong, otherwise we wouldnt need judges) so I dont know for sure. But I would be prepared for the ACCC to take no action as it wasnt Kogan that stated you will save the 15%

Anyway let us know how you go :)

        • @RockyRaccoon: Well then the complaint is still valid and ebay will get fined.

        • @RockyRaccoon: But yeah even if it's technically different I think it'll still be a breach of the law… I'll let you know if anything happens!

I guess the same reason why you see on ebay items selling for more than retail. Some people dont know the price and assume Kogan , ebay etc must be cheaper.
