Gaming Computer Build Help

Looking to build a mid-ranged quiet gaming PC (non OC) with $1300 budget.
I currently have a Samsung 840 EVO SSD and WDC 500GB HDD that i will reuse.

What do you guys think about the build? What should I change? Is everything compatible?

I have been really impressed with my fractal design … they are overpriced but I got it in an msy clearance list. great for media sttreaming/music production. really weighty is the downside when working on it…but it probably goes hand in hand with the quality feel on the build and sound dampening.

    • I love my Fractal Design Define S, I just need to get a filter sorted for the top due to having the moduvents removed to have my 360 exhausting.

  • Looks alright-personally I'd choose the be Quiet! case (personal preference really, both are great cases and it mainly comes down to looks).

Also, if you can, I'd highly recommend waiting for the next-gen GPUs to be released-they're coming quite soon so if you can manage with the integrated graphics (which are half decent) for the next month or two, it'd be worth it.

    • @donnot, so are we likely to see a price drop in the current GPUs, first time trying to build a PC. Though there is speculation release date will be later rather than earlier due to issues AMD are having.

I was looking at building something similar myself why have you chose the GTX 970 over the 390. Thanks, noob questions I know

Yeah, a price drop is quite likely but hard to predict. If you had to choose a GPU now, I'd personally go for the 390 for the extra vram and slightly better performance-at the cost of power consumption.

r/pcmasterrace would recommend 390 over 970 due to similar (or better) performance, cheaper and more VRAM.

    I have a G1 Gaming on a geforce 980, solid card + cooling.

Another thing is, I believe the i5 doesn't come with a cooler.
I assume you have one from your old rig, along with the SSD and HDD.
If you don't have one however, the Hyper 212 is the obvious choice, budget/performance/silence.

Lastly, glad to see that you're not skimping on PSU.

Yes it does. Only "K" processors don't come with a stock cooler.

      • Just checked, yes, it does come with a cooler. Saving OP more money.

    • Agreed with the 390. But in the end, personal preference for brand will often trump small differences in performance.

    • I've read that the 390 runs hotter and requires more juice to power (basically the 970 is more efficient), but that's all arguably negligible considering the savings involved.

      EDIT:
This vid is a good summary of the comparison between the 2 cards, if you're interested OP.

  • I'm not sure I could justify 16GB for gaming, you had it right with 8 - if you purely consider gaming.

    wait for the gtx 1070.
