Electricity and Gas Provider (Sydney, NSW)

Hi Guys,
We are moving to a new place and need to get Electricity and Gas. Just seeing if anybody had any thoughts.
It seems its pretty much a choice between Energy Australia, Origin and AGL. Just seeing if it makes any significant difference in terms of pricings. I did come across comments on the net indicating to stay away from Origin and AGL in terms of their service.
Otherwise I'll wait till we get a bill from whoever the provider is at the moment (as we do have electricity and gas) and then get the service connected in our name.

  • I've never had much need to deal with the company. They all send out a bill by paper or electronically. The meter readers are the same bunch, they are contractors doing it for all the providers. So it's just down to the plans and incentives they offer.

  • +2

Check out the Gas and Electricity price comparison websites on the Wiki, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/list_of_price_comparison_si…

  • i'm with TruEnergy, go for more plan… i think it's cheaper than the rest.. (excluding those on 2 yr contracts) since I'm renting on 12mth basis… those 'free 1 mth' dont really work out for me.

  • ActewAGL has no idea. They have overcharged me and stuffed me around four times in the last year! The kids on the phone are better than most, though.

If you wish to pay reasonable prices for reliable, accurate service keep away from ActewAGL. And I'd keep that in mind for TransACT and GrapeVine, too (associated companies.)

I haven't (yet) tried TRUEnergy, though they look promising.

I can't wait to have my own solar generators. (Resume proper rebates please!)

  • Thanks for everyones suggestion. I called AGL and they look promising with 2 year contract and you get 7% off the electricity. Also, if you break the contract you get charged only $79. You can take the connection with you to the next place if you move out.

  • Hmmm, I'm with Origin at the moment on the one month free deal. My elec bill is ~$250/qtr so the one month free equates to ~8.3% saving/year.

No contract either, but the catch is you need to stay with them for a year to get the free month, it's a more palatable way to lock you in ;)

And for the record, I've only ever had bad experiences with AGL =[

  • thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into Origin. That does sounds a bit better.

  • thanks for the suggestion randomNinja. I will get Origin as their deals better plus it seems AGL have a bit of bad reputation in terms of customer service.

  • I'm with Integral energy for electricity- get a 5% discount on the 2 year plan with ability to move places with it. Also they gave me membership to a rewards program (integral rewards, but it is some other group rebranded for them). The program actually has good discounts…including 5% off safeway/woolworths/petrol and coles gift cards plus cheap(under 10) movie tickets etc.
Their tarriff is also cheaper than energy australia even after the 7% discount they offered me.
For gas i'm on a free and easy (no contract) plan with tru energy. Get a 3% discount. again tarriff is better than energy australia after their 5% discount.

No problems with the companies above.
have had huge issues with agl and origin in the past….i moved into a new home and the first bill for gas was like over $1000. they were unhelpful and rude….
and after we moved in and the electricity was connected…it was suddenly disconnected one day in the middle of winter. When i rung, they said it was a mistake (oops we turned off the wrong thing)…but couldn't fix it for over 24 hrs…we were in the dark and cold…no apology or anything and no explanation why they couldn't turn it back on quicker.

    • thanks for the info. How did you resolve the $1000 bill? Did you have to go through an ombidsmund?

      • Nah I was stuck with it. There was a problem with the underthe house heating that we weren't aware of when we bought….so it was just wasting the gas like there was no tomorrow. I did point out to them how ridiculously high the gas consumption was for 2-3 months and they could have contacted us with a potential problem. They basically didn't feel it was their problem…but because of potential ombudsman issue, we were able to pay in installments without interest. Painful!

Thanks to your post, I decided to ring Integral with the offer from Energy Aust without mentioning the higher tariff and they are matching the 7% discount…so 2% more off! But the cards rewards program is gone.

  • EnergyPals.com.au offers electricity account holders an opportunity to join others in lobbying energy retailers for greater energy

Anyone found this site helpful ?

I cant see anything happening there, is this another fail like www.perkler.com.au ?

Starting with big noise and then fizzles out ?

    Feedback appreciated , thanks

  • Hi harribo, I'm not here to spruik energypals however I picked up your comments via Google so felt compelled to write in.

I started the website about a month ago so hoping we can crank up the sign-ups. Its been a low key start up so don't know where the big noise came from. Anyhow, its an opportunity for energy users to sign up and allow EnergyPals to lobby energy retailers in bulk, i.e. via a large volume of people rather than negotiating one on one with a retailer. So if your energy bill is high like mine despite careful use of the service, you may consider signing up and allowing us to lobby retailers on your behalf. And its free to register and participate.

Thanks for mentioning EnergyPals. Hopefully we can help thousands of users in due course.

    Cheers.

    Peter
