Crazy Free ... Seems to be a Scam

3 nights ago, while browsing for another bargain on this site, an embedded add appeared saying that you could get free Nike runners by subscribing to their website.

After providing my details and filling out a near endless survey that asked for my preference on different products and if I was interested in receiving additional information, I got the message that I am now eligible to receive the runners, so I was expecting something like what my shoe size was… this never happened.

I can't find any way to contact this company and the worst is that now telemarketers have not stopped calling me following this "warm lead"

I decided to put the onas on the telemarketers asking them (before they givr me their spill) to get me a contact number to get back to them. Obviously they say they don't know, so I ask them to pass this feedback on to their managers… but I know this won't do much.

Next steps will probably be going to scamwatch.org.au and entering mu number in the do not call register.

It would be interesting to find out any additional views on this.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for sharing.

You are why that site exists, OP. A lesson for next time: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Your personal information and survey answers have obviously been sold to hundreds of telemarketers and viagra sellers. There is no legit company providing the "free nikes". Don't be so greedy next time!

    • Upside is that there's no chance of a soft-on ever again!

Lol why did you?, they're just scamming you

Don't believe everything you see that could be free

Get a new number. Putting yourself on the DNC register will do nothing to stop international telemarketers.

Two approaches here. Either use an answering machine to screen calls, which is what we do. Friends know to call out when the beep thing happens so we answer the phone and the scum who call us usually drop off once they get to the answering machine.

The other alternative is everytime one of these guys rings up just keep chanting "where are my nike runners" continually until they hang up. They will probably put you on the no call list after that.

I can't believe anyone would fall for this. Oh well, you'll be fine when all that money comes through from the Nigerian guy.

If you are looking for a free pair of Nike runners try the power lines around your local dodgy neighbourhood

Oh, it's not a swindle. What you do is, see, you give them all your credit card numbers, and if one of them is lucky, they send you a prize.

Ah, they're run by Cohort Digital. I usually avoid competitions run by them due to the amount of spam/telemarketing.

I just had a look at their privacy policy:

We disclose personal information to our clients and advertisers, third party agents, service providers and contractors only for purposes consistent with the reasons for collecting the information set out in this Privacy Policy.

Some of the recipients of the personal information, including some of our service providers, are based overseas, in a wide variety of countries (including NZ, US, EU, Philippines, India and South Africa).

It says that you can contact them to ask for your information to be removed from their database (…but probably not from the databases of the people they've passed it onto, I guess?)

    Australian Office

    [email protected]; or
    1300 Cohort (1300 264 678); or
Crazy Free, Consumer Care Department, PO Box 369, Strawberry Hills, NSW, 2012.

    • Cohort digital collect information via surveys and competitions from Shop a Docket and Westfield. Be careful what information you give on these sites.

At least you've got a contact point now for attempting to get your free Nike shoes. Good luck.

  • this is why i never sign up for those raffle ticket sales, or win this car for $1 etc, all they want is your details so they can spam you with junk mail, phone calls, emails etc etc

Hello,I am calling from Sydney, how are you today? - ( although all said in an Indian accent )
Me - " what are you calling regarding?"
Him - I have a wonderful offer from Optus,Solar panels, Telsra Warehouse, viagra, Nigeria, - blah, blah, blah ……..?…
Me - Do you know what a whistle is?
Him - Optus, solar panels & Queen Bethshieba in Nigeria all wish to deposit many funds into your account - please give me your account details.

Me - Please hold the phone very close to your ear as I don't want anyone else to hear these private details. Pause, then a very loud whistle is blown down the phone.
Everything goes quiet after the initial " Aarrgh " then the phone call is suddenly cut off. - Surprising that, isn't it?

  • Yes - I HAVE HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING. However, I also worked for British Telecomm. for years, where there was a device called " A Howler" which could be sent to a caller who was making dirty phone calls ( certainly stopped them in the middle of getting their rocks off ) A whistle is nowhere as loud as that was, & I believe should not be an offence that the innocent party is fined for. The total offence is these scammers who prey on us all to try to rip us off with their ridiculous schemes. So many innocent people fall for it - especially the elderly or people with lesser understanding of their calls & fall into the trap.
These scam calls need to be addressed by both the government & all phone companies. The phone companies have the technological knowledge to deal with the situation. We can block nuisance calls from within Australia, so therefore extend the range. Some of these overseas scammers are able to call us with a number that comes up as being in Australia, when in fact they are in India, Phillipines or wherever. How can they have that technology but we in Australia cannot combat their scams?

    • Scams are like viruses or superbugs. You eliminate one (well it may appear so) then they pop back up stronger. As long as money is involved, scams won't stop. As long as gullible/uneducated/greedy people think they've won or inherited a bunch of money that they don't deserve, why would scammers stop? You can't get rich quick and easy from a proper career.
