(It does support lots things, but last firmware/software update was on 2012, it may
not support all new protocols/apps)

You should have ordered a new keyboard as well, seems a few of the keys don't work

Unfortunately the fix is not that easy for some people

  • Good for Plex Server?

    • +1

Not really….Plex server heavily relies on power of CPU cores and amount of cores themselves, this is what is most important, than RAM etc.

I'm currently using 2 old laptops as a PMS. One of the laptops had its screen broken so I just created a headless 2012 Server R2 using Teamviewer. Each of the laptops have 2 cores each.

Go here and check to make sure whatever your using as is at least >2000.

      • That's if you need to transcode, very little CPU power required otherwise, so it depends on the client.

        • 100% correct. Was commenting under the impression that TightAssDrake required transcoding of some sort. If not then anything really would work as a Plex Server. Particularly over DLNA. Have tried numerous times to use the PS4 - app just isn't up to scratch and it buffers every few minutes.

A quick peek at newegg.com & amazon.com reviews shows a whole lot of unhappy owners (issues which occur after a few months & for which Patriot never responded to fix w/firmware)…FYI

  • Can I use this as an external caddy for a jbod?

    Already got a microserver

    • Not according to product description and forum posts. The eSATA port is for adding external storage. If it possible to reverse its function to use as an external enclosure then it would be undocumented. I was considering the same possibility.

  • Guys, I'm totally new on this so I'm not sure if this thing would fit my purpose.
I'm trying to build a system where I can use my laptop to download movies onto a separate HDD within my wifi network and then from my laptop, tell my TV to stream/play that movie wirelessly from that HDD. Would this be something achievable with a "NAS system"/Plex server? (Or could someone ELI5 how I'd achieve this please)

    • All depends on the capability of your TV.
If it can open files on a (network) share, eg NAS,
you won't need a laptop to play a movie.

    • I doubt this would run a plex server on its own. It may however be used as a mass storage drive for a machine that is running plex. I don't know if USB 2.0 is going to be a bottle neck issue, but from reading other forums, this unit hardly seems to run very well at doing simple tasks…

If you want a stand alone Plex server, use one of the tried and tested recommended models that Plex have listed as working on their site.

Is Plex on a NAS good for you?
      https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201373793-Is-Plex-…

NAS units that support Plex (and the ones that don't…)

Or you know… Just Google it yourself. There are sooooooooooo many websites that will help answer your Plex questions…

  • Very cheap temporary use RAID(JBOD) case!

    • According to product description and forum posts the eSATA port is for adding external storage. If it possible to reverse its function to use it as an external enclosure then it would be undocumented. I was considering the same possibility.

you know it's gotta be the lowest rung on the ladder for entry level NAS based on price but how bad could it actually be. Well you'd probably start with the Spec's. More like the omitted spec's or nonrelated info pass on as spec's.

No CPU spec. Had to deep deeper than I'd like to find it sports a 'Applied Micro PowerPC 431EXr @ 800MHz'. No plex unfortunately but as expected for such a device.

    No RAM spec's. 256MB DRAM

    LAN spec. RJ-45 Connector - Seriously…at least I found it's a Gigabit port.

Okay what sata support…hmmmm none - found it's SATAII 3Gps ok (still usable).

    Applied Micro PowerPC 431EXr @ 800MHz
    256MB DRAM
    OS: BusyBox Unix
    File System: XFS

No firmware support by the looks of it above 4Tb drives.

I want to try it on price alone, but I think I'll look at a more uptodate/spec NAS. So tempted if it wasn't for others and issues.

    • Yeah Synology, Thecus, etc. have good cheap NAS boxes.

    Thank you.

    • Sorry to hear that.

I received mine yesterday, the ozbargain gods must have been smiling on me :)

Within half an hour the drives were loaded, set to raid 5 and had it set up wireless thru an existing access point.

I dont use any of the features in the outdated software so that is not an issue. I can stream 1080p movies from this unit to all rooms in the house without an issue.

Just not sure what the life expectation on a $77 NAS is. I definitely would not use it as a primary backup for anything.
