Transfer files from NAS to Computer

I have a NetGear ReadyNAS102 which has around 800GB of files, I need those transferred to my PC HDD

Right now the NAS is connected via LAN and copying over LAN would take forever.

The NAS has a USB 3.0 outlet and so does my PC, does that mean I can get a male-male USB cable and this should work?

Right now the NAS is connected via LAN and copying over LAN would take forever.

why? are both on a hardwired network?

    that will be the fastest

    • Yes both PC and NAS on hard wire network but, ive tried to copy some files and the speed was like 20 mb/s

  • If you're doing over 20mb/s then you're connected at gigabit speeds. Transferring to a mechanical drive can be slow and cumbersome but the biggest drawback will be if the computer is doing anything else while you're doing the transfer. Watching a movie, surfing the net, even playing some music means that the physical heads have to go between accessing whatever you're doing and then go back to writing the data you're moving from your NAS.

Try leaving the computer idle, and turning off the internet. That way the computer doesn't try and do updates while idle and you're speeds should improve.

Depending on your computer's hard drive you won't get much faster, most consumer mechanical drives are limited to 70-80mb/s peak with no interruptions.

No, a male to male USB 2/3 cable does not exist and is an 'illegal' specification of the USB standards (no, not law illegal, just a 'nono' from the IEEE spec, rest easy you won't be getting charged ;) ). Mainly because such a cable would mean shorting out your power pins to each machine

  • I have a similar setup and get 50mbs upwards too.
How close are they? Have you tried bypass router and hookup direct lan cable?
Also smaller files have more overhead from what I've experienced = slower.

Maybe you can physically move the HDD to the computer, transfer and put it back?

Pull out hdd from computer make it portable hdd then plug to nas directly and copy
