  • Do these have expiry dates?

    • +2

The ones I bought online and from Coles/Woolies had an expiry date on them.

      • how long are they?

        • +3

It varies but around mid 2017.

        • @amts: thanks

        • @amts: That's inactive, right? And 30 days since activation?

  • Does anyone know of a way to find out what the expiry date is before buying it? I'm currently on a 24 month plan so won't be able to use it until it finishes up

    • +2

Wowww.. thats some future plannnig??? You really think that this sort of deal would not come back before 24 months again???

      • Contract might only have a couple of months remaining.

      • +1

        I have 3 months left

    • Their live chat team said there isn't. The expiry date is 2 years from manufacturing date but they have no way of tracking this. As such, you can receive an expired kit (some people in prior threads have indicated they have) although they will process a refund for you. Therefore you are basically hoping they don't (keep) sending you expired kits if you are buying online!

Are Boost worried now that Aldi has released better prices??

    • Hopefully, because Boost's offerings aren't looking that great any more. They do have full Telstra coverage going for them though.

    • +3

It's probably also that Telstra are getting hammered between Optus' aggressive pricing over the last 6-9 months, plus all the Optus and Vodafone MVNOs (Amaysim, TPG, Kogan) have been running specials for many months.

Competition heated up again since Allan Lew took over at Optus, and since Vodafone upgraded their network to be competitive again. Further triggered by TPG taking their 320,000 customers from Optus to Vodafone.

I realise this will be a controversial statement but the reality is Optus invested heavily in their network over the last couple of years, expanding coverage and quality. Telstra still has the perception of being the superior network (and indisputably has the widest coverage nationally) but there are places where Optus has 4G that Telstra doesn't, and the perception of Telstra having the widest coverage leads to congestion in some areas which actually means Optus ends up being the better option.

TL;DR Telstra's been milking its "superior network" image for years to command premium pricing but that advantage is gradually being eroded. And not helped by their 3 outages this year.

      • Would you say Optus/Vodafone have comparable coverage and speeds with Telstra for non-rural areas (given Telstra seems to have the widest coverage nationally)?

        • I can't speak for Vodafone coz I haven't really used them enough in recent times but I regularly use both Optus and Telstra data and they're pretty much equivalent from my city (Sydney) dwelling experience. I say "pretty much" because they both have their own problems, just in different spots.

I go up the coast towards Port Macquarie/Kempsey every few months and I find the Optus service is actually faster because of the congestion reason mentioned above. e.g. Crescent Head which is a popular tourist spot is completely unusable on Telstra coz they only have 3G available, yet surprisingly Optus has 4G there and it's great.

The great thing from a consumer POV is that there's so many Optus deals constantly running that it's cheap to try them out if you're a Telstra customer. The only annoyance is porting which works fine 99% of the time but there's always that 1% risk that something doesn't go right and you're left having to call customer service (blech).

The Optus $30 starter packs for $10 is a great one to try (it's a regular deal at Woolies, Coles, sometimes even direct from Optus). Put it in a spare phone, sign up for the My Daily Plus plan which is $2/day with 90 day expiry. You only get charged the $2 if you make a call/SMS or use data so turn off data and you can use it to check out signal availability without cost. And when you feel the need for an extra data boost, turn on tethering and you can use it as a WiFi hotspot for your regular phone to piggyback. $2 gets you 500MB for the day, or $4 for 1GB, no rollover.

I use this whenever I go up the coast - plentiful and flexible data. :)

        Hard to generalise.

I have several active lines on Telstra, Optus (amaysim), Voda & Lebara (all sorts of postpaid & prepaid). My observations (which are specific to the areas I am in):
        a) Voda 4G (and 3G) in urban areas almost as fast as Telstra non-700Mhz 4G for my use
        b) Telstra 3G is great up north in extremely rural areas, and on the main street I have regularly got Voda 3G. Optus is nowhere to be seen.
        c) In certain areas within 3km of CBD, Optus splutters even though 4G indicator is displayed. Calls won't connect, and bandwidth drops. Have just defaulted to Telstra there.

I suspect saturation in those areas, that said, in my limited experience Voda seems to be overtaking Optus in terms of bandwidth, coverage and thoroughput. May not be the case in eastern states, whatever works for us I guess …

    • Seems the discounts offered will decide. I'm unsure if OzBers would even pay non-discounted mobile service subscriptions. Boost have 3GB + 2GB every weekend for $40 discounted to $20, Aldi have 5GB for $35 undiscounted, cheapest subscription I bought recently was Kogan 5GB for $11 discounted but on 3G network

  • The last Boost deal I purchased, they sent out expired sim pack. Went through the online chat and phone calls, only managed to have them resend after 3 weeks and its air locked service so I had to go post office to collect personally.

All I can say for the experience; very similar handling to Telstra - (1) horrible and rude staff for Boost, (2) clueless staff, (3) your time dealing with their muck ups better off spent with your family.

Having said that, it is good value, but I dont think the $40 can be used for recharge? Probably need to port out and in but I could be wrong. Didnt manage to use them after the last drama.

Can someone clarify, the $40 sim for $20… Is that for one month? Or ongoing?

    • Im just on there web site asking that same question now

      • +2

        Reply from boost:

That promotion is only if you buy a $40 SIM card online and you'll only pay $20 for it. Once the SIM Card is activated, you will have UNLimited call to standard national numbers? MessageBank retrieval & 1300/1800 numbers, unlimited SMS to standard Australian numbers and 3GB plus 2GB every weekend all within 30 days.
Then once it is used up or expired, you will have the recharge $40 to have the UNLTD service again.

Yes like all the other $5, $10, $15 prepaid starter kit deals in the past, it is just for the starter pack. Recharges are at the normal price.

        • I'm guessing you can port out and back in with a $2 sim card from another company?

        • @vvti85: I just stock up with Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Boost, Amaysim starter packs and switch between them.

        • Cheers

Just bought a $40 one thanks op

  • Anyone knows if Boost sim will work in a Telstra Buzz phone?

    • +1

      OLDROCKER…Sure Does

      • Thanks mate

  • So these sorts of deals pop up all the time here where it's just your first month/30 days/28 days that is discounted and then you will have to pay the original price every month after that. So is it really worth the hassle on changing Sim cards and porting your phone number over every few months to get the "best deal" eg saving a few bucks??? Not sarcasm genuinly curious if it's worth it since I only recently got off 2 year contract plan but it seems like a bit of a pain to buy all these cheap sims/deals, change Sim, Port number, etc etc.

    • You get used to it. Helps if the phone cover is easy to take off or if you have a dual SIM phone. Mine is 3G on both SIM slots. I miss out on 4G speeds but I'm not watching vids.

    • For some of its, for some it's not. It only takes 10 minutes or so of actual time and saves $15-$20 a pop so to me it is worth it.

For others they just want to set auto recharge and forget, so for them it's not worth the hassle.

  • It's really worth porting, I pay around $10 a month (or 28 days) and generally get unlimited text, calls to Auz and anything between 3GB and 7GB. I stick to VF, TS, Optus, Amaysim - i'm lucky my dual SIM was chosen for its coverage of all the bands and my travels are rarely rural…
Saving about $350 a year with no contracts.

  • Boost plans really need improvement. Aldi's new plans and Telstra Prepaid Freedom Plus are better value.

  • Have just returned from 3 weeks in Tasmania. I have dual sim with el cheapo long expiry Virgin for incomings, and half price or less whatever I have purchased on special for outgoings. I made sure I put in an unlimited Boost sim before leaving. I had coverage in most places (don't care if it's 3g or 4g) except parts of some National parks. Virgin and husband's Amaysim had virtually no coverage anywhere except for very major cities.

    • Yeah from my travels and what I've heard from others, Optus is next to useless in Tassie except cities

  • I just saw the report, the $40 for $20 has expired :( Means Aldi is the better value with their $35 for medium data users
