Energy Gel for Running Event

Just seeing if you guys had recommendation for enegery gels. Last year friend of mine gave me some for City2Surf which I found pretty helpful to get extra push.
He mentioned he got it for a dollar but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Just seeing if you guys had any suggestion?

  • I have seen gel packs at Rebel Sport and Chemist Warehouse (I think).
Rebel Sport wasn't a dollar - I know the Chemist was cheaper but not sure about the price.
The GU packs were ok, a bit thick and rich.
The Endura ones were a bit 'wetter' and went down a little easier.
They come in a variety of flavours so just go with what you think you'll like.

  • Energy gels can be bought for 1/2 price when close to expiry date.

Unless you want to buy close to expiry stock or online (which means you'll have to buy in bulk to make the shipping worthwhile) Chemist Warehouse tends to be the cheapest and they have a decent range.

Just be sure to try them out before race day, some of them can play hell on your gut and you don't want to get the runs 5kms into a race.

  • woolies and coles sell them (well used to, haven't looked for a year)

For C2S I wouldn't bother. Just have a banana and a black coffee before you start.

    try wiggle http://www.wiggle.com.au/run/nutrition/
I was always going to buy from them as it seems good prices (especially on sale) but never did as I always left it too late.

wiggle is normally good but if you are only going to buy 1 or 2 shipping will kill the deal. If I was after 1 or 2 I would probably just buy at Supermarket or Bike Shop. I use them for big (5hr+) cycling events but as someone else said, give them a try on a training run/ride first. Some of them are disgusting and the only thing preventing me for turning myself inside out via my own mouth is the fact that when i use them I am already at the point of exhaustion and dont have the energy. I had one once that was coffee and orange flavour, cant remember the brand but that is not a nice partnership of flavours, who dreamed it up??

Not sure what event you are doing but some of the big organised cycling events I've done have had boxes of gels at the rest/water stops or start line. I have actually loaded up with a few and ended up not using them all and bringing some home. Not really free as I've paid a couple of hundred for the ride to begin with.

I find that some of the less gooey ones run all over my hands and face when i am trying to eat on the move, leaving me with sticky mouth/fingers for the next 3 hours whilst the more solid ones sit like a block on the top of my mouth.

      • yeah, my son does a lot of hiking - training for Kokoda challenge races etc. Some brands he says are OK, some he says are really thick and hard to swallow. He doesnt like them generally.
Woolies used to sell a Gatorade brand one that he said was OK but not around anymore. they have other brands still.

I prefer energy bars but they are often longer to digest. As bad as most of them are, when exhausted i have actually taken energy gels and had a rush of energy 10-15 mins later that lasted for 30-45 mins. As something to get you through a tough stage they are probably OK, the energy bars tend to be a slower burn.

I've probably had the best results with the 'Endura' brand but i cant remember half of the ones I've taken.

      • Thanks. Im doing long run. I think chemist warehouse seems to be the winner
