Are Clap Lamps out of Fashion?

I've been searching the web and eBay etc and can't seem to find a clap lamp. I admit I've only ever really seen it on The Simpsons, but surely they exist? Yes i'm to lazy to reach over and use a switch, and the clapping seems like a much easier option.

The closest i can find is this - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Novelty-Voice-Activated-LED-Night… But i would much rather buy something approved by Australian standards with an Australia plug.

  • The thing that was parodied in the Simpsons was called the clapper
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Clapper

In the 19th episode of The Simpsons' ninth season, titled "Simpson Tide" originally aired on the Fox network on March 29, 1998, a reference to "The Clapper" is made where Homer tells his wife Marge that "We live in a highly technological age where fighting a war is as simple as turning off a light!" then proceeds to clap with his hands… and the light remains on.. he continues clapping while Marge says "We don't have a clapper" the gag ends with the lamp flying out the window to turn it off.

It was a real device that was sold in the 80's.

Yes they've gone out of fashion but with an Arduino you can make your own..

Nowadays though you can get smart color-changing LED lightbulbs that can receive bluetooth and wifi commands from a smartphone and smartwatch. e.g Belkin WeMo, Phillips Hue and so on. I think this is the safest option if you don't want to dabble with soldering and possibly zapping yourself.

My sister had one when we were kids. Fun for a little while, but annoying when you want to turn the light off and your loud clapping wakes people up!

    • In my mind they sit with the key chain my Dad had that would beep if you whistled to help you find lost keys. When he lost his keys we would all walk around whistling at different pitches to try to make the device beep. You never knew if it was right there but your whistle was the wrong tone, or if it was in another room.
The 80s were a time of promise In the adverts rarely delivered in the real world!

I had one of those lamps once. I hired an escort of particularly low standard, and as soon as she walked into my bedroom the thing started flashing like a strobe light. Weirdorama.

    • knew i'd be too late :)

  • Were they ever in fashion?
