HP ProLiant ML10 V2 discussion thread

I just wanted to start this thread for people to discuss the $199 crap boxes.

No I'm kidding. I've unboxed mine and powered it up to see what the go is.

First thing I noticed is that the thing is very loud. I have always been working with the big HP servers and they are all very loud without installing the o/s tools..

HP release a Windows Power Management s/w package that allows you to control temp and it quiets things down to normal pc level.

I assume this is there for Windows 2012. Could be a problem with non Windows.

2nd thing I note is that this uses passive CPU cooling via a big clear air duct. This also covers the PCI cards so it will limit the size of the vga you want to use.

Otherwise at this point I havent worked out what I'm going to use this for.

Comments

  • I was hoping to pull a SDD with an Arch linux install with sickrage/plex/kodi/smb etc and plug it in and boot and go. Not having much luck with that at all :(

I had to set the SATA state to ACHI which gave me access to the HDD, then i had issues with the display driver (gma)

Looks like i might have to try and do a fresh install and see how that goes.

Anyway… Has anyone had an success installing the new SPP without an OS install ?

    • I dumped my syspreped w7pro image on it then ran SPP (in windows) to update firmware etc.

  • So can I please ask those that have pulled the trigger on this server whether there is a cpu fan header available to switch out the stock passive cooler?

Also does this version come with the 4x HDD cage as I read some O/S don't for the base model?

    Thx

  • does not come with the cage but apparently you can buy it as a spare part (about $50). The thread on homeservers has the p/n.

ALso this thing does not support normal ram… I beleive you must use ecc but you may be able to turn it off in bios.

  • ECC RAM Cheap Looking for 4gb+ to upgrade ML10 V2 HP

Can anyone please help? some ram im finding is the same price as buying the box.

    Help?

  • I'm quite happy with my HP ML10 box. I replaced the CPU and increased memory. currently running 7 virtual servers, Fan noise is almost same as microserver.

  • +4

To all those complaing about graphics cards and RAM support in this thing, you need to sit down and look at what this is. It is not a client PC for desktonp use, it is a HPE SERVER. This means ECC memory support, this means it will be loud at boot, this means that it is not designed to take discrete graphics.

RAM can be added - KTH-PL316ES/4G
Noise - it settles down once it has posted.
GPU - the power supply in this is designed to run 6 SATA devices, nothing more.

  • +1

Got 32GB of ECC RAM off eBay for $228. Unboxed the machine, swapped out the RAM, pulled 6 drives out of my old N36L Microserver, popped them into the ML10 along with the old NAS4Free USB and it ran with no configuration needed whatsoever.

  • Anyone selling their old 4gb ecc sticks when they upgrade? I am in the market for a couple.

    • did u miss out on futu's sale of 8gb for $60 shipped?

      • Yes but I was also worried about incompatibility. Whilst I assume that ram works, it would also need to work with the existing 2x4gb sticks of slightly different ram. I figure 16gb will be enough.

It would be great if someone could confirm that the 8gb futu ram works with the 4gb that came with the server.

  • Works.but out of stock. U can also mix the 4gb with 8gb.

  • Does anyone know empirically whether ESXi can access the hard drives directly under this hardware? I have read conflicting reports elsewhere!

    Thanks

      does that signify official support

i think things would get expensive though with a suitable cpu and ram

      • Thanks I did see that afterwards. It seems quite expensive to add the E3 cpu!

        • Well a decent E3 cpu is at least $400? And its only a quad core? I have a Xeon already in another machine but I feel maybe quad + 4 hyperthreads maybe be better? Like a plain i7?

Plus you need maybe 4 x 4Gb ecc modules? or 4 x 8Gb modules? Starts to get very expensive.

  • Edit: Woops…posted in wrong thread over to the new one.

  • bought one recently and installing FreeNAS.
one odd thing though, via Powering off via FreeNAS, the box powers off momentarily and decided to spring back to life. Has anyone had the same experience? Im puzzled.

  • has anyone replaced their fan with quieter one?

    • I will probably be working on this in a couple of weeks. I have ordered 6pin headers from ebay and some PWM extension wires to splice. Keep watching this thread

      • i'd love to know the outcome. thanks champ!

  • I have read people replacing the standard cooling fan with a noctua 90mm. This works fine. However from what i have read, the majority of the noise comes from the poor quality fan in the delta power supply. However replacing the powersupply is not a matter of just taking an ATX psu and replacing it, as it has a 10pin hard drive connector.

I have bought a ML10v2 delivered to my home in melbourne (i am not there yet but will be next week), ordered one of these harnesses and will let you guys know how I go.

I also ordered the crucial 8gb 1866 DDR3 ECC ram to use with the ML10v2 (compatibility checks out on Crucial's website)

    My ML10v2 project:
    Install 8GB ram
Exchange Delta psu with Corsair CX430
    Use wiring harness
Replace existing 92mm fan with Noctua 92mm
    Install Xpenology/windows server 2k16 or 2012 R2 (still deciding)

  • Mine had the motherboard replaced, working fine now, runs server 2012 with hyper v vms on top.
Fan Noise seems to be reasonable when hard disks are in a RAID.
Running a Intel i3 4170, the Xeon was too expensive.
