How does one score a good deal on Topdeck or Contiki tours of Europe?

Hi Team,

Thinking of booking either a Topdeck or Contiki this year as a gift to myself before I head into my 30's.

I went to the local Flight Centre and was pretty much quoted the catalogued price with no further discounts.

I recall booking a Contiki of America several years ago and was given a significant discount as agent at the time (since moved on) said they'll look after me because of the level of commissions they receive on these types of tours.

Has anyone booked one of these recently and what discounting did you receive?

Any other Europe travel tips for young (ish) people also much welcome.

Thanks

How does one score a good deal on Topdeck or Contiki tours

Lower your standards and lower your pants.

  • I went on Contiki a few (ehm…ok several years ago) we got a discount as we booked 4 people and paid a few months in advance. Through flight centre. But it wasn't a huge saving. It was a really good time as we got to hang out with others our age, and there were lots of couples and friends and first time overseas (which we were). The people I hang out with there were not 'pants down' despite the reputation.

  • I use a agency called Global Journeys based in QLD. I've booked several tours with them and they do better than retail. Sometimes by a lot, sometimes by a little. Worth taking a look at them.

  • The best thing to do is go to a travel expo. Be prepared to pay a deposit on the day. But other than that it's alot cheaper.
If you're looking for similar at a budget expatexplore is pretty good but has less of a party rep.

  • I waited until about 1 month before the tour left last year and they knocked about 500 off it on the contiki website

  • If you've already been on a Contiki they used to give you a 5% discount on all subsequent tours. You could ask about whether that offer is still around.

  • I did a topdeck a few years ago. This is what I did to keep costs low:

Got a 10% discount by going to a travel expo
    5% discount for paying upfront
Then instead of getting one big tour, I split it into two smaller tours (same trip, just advertised different ways in the catalogue) meaning 5% off the second half of the trip.
