    I was going to share it, but didn't think many would be interested here :P

      Quoting the link in wiki:

      Charity deals where the user receives nothing in return are not a bargain

      Except for this deal the user receives 1000 Membership Rewards points.

        • The bargain is the 1000 points. It's not purely a donation. It's not like the poster is soliciting donations.

          @aussiejack23:

          The bargain is the 1000 points.

          How is it a bargain if you are paying $50 and getting back $5 ?

        • +3

          You're getting $50 worth of karma for $45

        • +2

          @jv: it's not what you get back, it's what is got. 50 to charity, 5 back. 55 value for 50, a bargain for some

        • -5

          @grasstown:

          50 to charity, 5 back

          you pay the charity $50 and get back $5

          you're $45 out of pocket…

        • @grasstown: plus a rebate on tax so perhaps another $14.62 at tax time.

        • +4

          @jv: By your reasoning, the ING PayWave Cashback isn't a deal either, because you have to spend money to get it. But everyone unanimously agrees it is.

        • +1

          @jv:

          If you're going to spend the $50 anyway (which is a likely scenario for most people who set themselves a target of charitable donations per year), then you're getting that $5 value back. Same logic as ING paywave, you have to spend money to receive money back / make the deal work, but it's money you're going to spend anyway. Der.

          I didn't realise you were a mod, jv. Or do you just think you are? You seem to love posting on every single bloody deal. Just because you embolden your words doesn't make what you're saying any more accurate, just makes you look like a stubborn fool.

    • My wife always donates whereas I don't. Getting something back from donating satisfies us both :p

      • -3

        That doesn't make it a bargain.

        It also means you can"t claim a tax deduction.

        • Please explain why I can"t claim a tax deduction.

          It's a bargain if I I get something back for a $50 donation when normally I get nothing back from a $50 donation. So now my $50 now has more value

          I too am really interested to know how this Amex credit would disqualify eligibility for a tax deduction. Do you have a reference, jv? Tax ruling or statute reference, maybe? I wouldn't think that credit card points would be a material advantage that the ATO would be concerned about. Think of the consequences if people were not allowed to claim deduction because of credit card points they accrued.

        • Still waiting on that explanation, jv. Would love to see the facts.

  • is there still many places to use them?

    • Do you mean the points? If so yes for flights with Singapore Airlines, Virgin Australia, etc. If you don't have enough points you can even purchase them from Amex for $25 per 1000 points.

    Donated, thanks OP. Could not donate blood so this is a good way to contribute. Also this is tax deductible so triple win?

  • +2

    Is this donation tax deductible since you're receiving something for your donation?

    • +1

      Yes

        • It seems debatable to me. YOu're still donating $50 like any other online donation, then amex is just rebating you on your donation. two seperate transactions, would be harsh and im sure the ato wouldn't enforce it for $50. if you were trying $5,000 maybe. They have bigger fish to fry. I'd argue that you're not getting something back from red cross by donating, it is just your credit card provider adding a sweetener

      Hi,

      As far as I know, I don't think donation is tax deductible through a Credit card provider.

    miss the MS 5000 points for $150 donation a few years back.

  • For the Amex users out there.
    I just recently applied for platinum edge. I can't see any offers from my online account or iOS apps.
    Does anyone know why?

    Thanks in advanced

    • +1

      The very same thing happened to me when picked my card up 18 months ago or so. Took a good 6 months until they all started rolling in.

      • Thank you. Will have to wait it out and manual enrolment. Cheers

    • Amex told me it generally takes 1 to 3 statements before any offers show up. Probably something to do with targeting offers/analytics on their end.

  • I only have NAB Amex. I gather this only works with direct Amex card, not the co-branded cards?

  • +3

    JV you're such a hater!

  • +4

    I think I can get my company to match my donation as well, win-win for all!

  • +1

    Not showing up on my account or the connect site. I have an amex issued card. Any ideas?

  • Does anyone know how much 1,000 points normally redeems for - statement credit wise? Can't see it on the mobile app currently. Curious - this seems pretty good. $50 tax deduction, so on an average 30% income tax rate this is about a $35 donation, and in return your credit card provider also gives you 1,000 points. be interesting to see if that can save you a good $5-10 off in statement credit, so in effect you're donating $20-25 for $50 of effectiveness normally.
