How to Stop Car Door Seals from Sticking?

I have a 2005 car and the rear door seals often stick.

It seems to happen if I don't use the doors for a while. But it also seems to happen if I leave the car parked in the sun, even for a few hours.

A friend actually broke the rear door handle trying to open the door. I've fixed up the handle but I don't want it to happen again.

Is there any simple fix to stop the rubber seal from sticking? I was thinking WD-40 but I'm not sure if that would work and I don't want to use a chemical that might corrode or degrade the rubber seal. I tried cleaning the door frame and the seal with a damp rag but it didn't seem to have any affect.

  • Spray with silicone spray, wd40 will dry the rubber out. Maybe do it a couple of times over a week as the rubber will absorb some of the silicone.

    • Should I spray both surfaces or just the rubber? Where can I buy cheap silicone spray?

      • Armour all should work too.

      • SuperCheap Auto. You could also consider a very light smear of vaseline on the rubber seal, that's how you fix sticking fridge seals.

  • Consider using silicone grease, whatever that is supposed to be:-

  • Silicone grease is like the gel form of silicone spray. Bit messier as you would need to spread it with your finger or some other implement. Plus spray is more convenient to use on squeaky hinges etc.
