Speed Limit Sign Now Covered up

A few weeks ago there were several contractors outside my house (north Brisbane) and down the length of my 60kph road. After they left, a bunch of new No Stopping signs had appeared, and the one 60kph sign on my road (right on the grass next to my driveway) had now been covered with a bare metal sheet over it. You can still see the top and bottom of the red circle, but not any part of the number.

Has my road now been converted to a 50kph as the only 60kph sign has been covered up? If so, why was the sign just covered and not removed and/or replaced with a 50kph sign? If not, why cover the sign up at all? I did attempt to call department of transport and just got fobbed off in circles of transfers to other people, no one could give me a straight answer after an hour.

Since that day I've noticed mobile speed cameras on my road multiple times per week, compared to the once every two or so months that it used to be. It seems to me like this is a temporary revenue raising trick to lower the speed limit without notice and not providing any new signage just so they can dish out tickets for 10kph~ over limit for those who "know" what the speed limit is on this road. Either that or I'm just a full blown pessimist now. Probably the latter.

Yes. The (temporary) limit is now 50.

If so, why was the sign just covered and not removed and/or replaced with a 50kph sign?

Because it is probably a temporary variation of the speed limit. It is likely that further work will be carried out in that vicinity.

If not, why cover the sign up at all?

It is covered because for now at least, it's a 50 zone.

That's expected, after all you did call a government department.

  • I did attempt to call department of transport

In Queensland only certain major roads are controlled by the State. Here is a map of the State-controlled roads around the Brisbane metro area:

http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/-/media/Travelandtransport/Maps-an… (the feint orange roads are Council-controlled)

Most roads are responsibility of the local council. If you don't live on a State-controlled road, then the contractors were likely contracted by BCC so you would need to enquire with BCC. Probably start by calling BCC on 3403 8888. If you don't get very far then write to your local councillor.

Speed limits are 50 unless stated otherwise, they removed the otherwise 60 sign temporarily so it is now 50 until further notice.
