They show cheaper in the cart because the VAT is taken off for non EU customers. I love this about Amazon UK, it usually offsets the postage. I remember using these for mixing when studying sound and they were great, but can't remember if they were good for general music listening.

    • +2

Ah I see thanks, edited OP.

I've recently received mine after reading up about them online. They are generally accepted as the best all in one at the price point. For conditions like closed-back isolation with a good soundstage still, exceptional long use comfort, bass level, robustness and general sound quality throughout the range. I'd say they lose out on portability though with the long cable and bulkiness, but that's not their intended design after all.

  • With such impedance you'll need a headphone amp

    • +1

Only the 250 ohm version, and even that is debatable and entirely depends on the output of the source.

    • +1

@xiangtan That basic belief might be a reason why the 32 Ohm goes for more. It turns out the 80 can run too loud on for example phones that aren't too quiet or volume limited. I think some recent phones are volume limited but some are fine. I'm using the 80 on a Z3 Compact which falls into the former of being volume limited. With a kernel sound mod to increase power amping without digital gain it gets there.

Oh and they sound great without an external DAC so just as long as your source sounds good to begin with and gets loud enough. I'm blown away by Sony's DSEE HX 24bit/96kHz upscaling tech.

The 80 is the popular choice with uniquely significant more bass than the others. This post summarises the differences:
      http://www.head-fi.org/t/513393/guide-sonic-differences-betw…

The 32 was released last after the success of an Anniversary Edition that it ended up continuing the production of just rebranded. It seems to be just a changed and compromised 250.

      • Hi guys,

As someone who is not headphone savvy, does anyone mind explaining the difference to me? (32ohm etc). Which ones should us Ozbarg members be looking to purchase? :)

        • +2

Ohms are a measure of electrical resistance. Anotherwords, how hard does your computer have to push to power the headphones. The greater the resistance in the headphones, the more power required, which results in headphones sounding 'quieter'.

Small devices like your phone or iPod simply don't have the power to drive high ohm headphones. You'll need a nice powerful amplifier or DAC for the 250ohm version.

Basically, if you're planning to use it with your phone, get 32ohm version. If you'll be using them on the computer, get the 80ohm version. If you've got a nice amp/DAC or you plan to use them in a studio environment, you can get the 250ohm version.

        • @vicerum: Curious to know, what's the main reason to get a high ohm headphone? If it is just a volumn thing, you can always just turn it down right?

        • @ProjectZero:

I'm not really sure. I've never owned 250ohm headphones myself, I've never had a need for them.

It probably has something to do with higher impedance allowing greater current when plugging into big studio amps, that sort of thing.

        • +1

Smething worth noting is the 32 has pleather pads and a coiled cable versus velour and straight on the others. Pleather doesn't breathe so will heat up and cause some sweat and discomfort for longer listening. They're responsible for increased isolation and tightened bass.

        • @vicerum:

          Thanks heaps. Great response.

        • @ProjectZero: ELI5: higher impedance = more turns of wire in the voice coil = more controlled output = sound better.

But they need to be amplified… which works out well, since most amplifiers have lower distortion at high impedances.

It's not really about volume, for that you need to look at the sensitivity. Beyer headphones, especially the new T models, are pretty sensitive already, so don't actually need really tons of power to go ear-smashingly loud. My Beyer T1s are 600ohm and get powered by my mp3 player just fine. My T90s are 250ohm and I can drive them directly from my soundcard with zero issues.

        • @jjcf: Thanks mate, might consider getting the 250ohm then.

    • I tried them in store. Still sound great without an amp on my phone and sony walkman

  • +4

I paid $450 for these 13 years ago. I still love them dearly, so i've totally got my moneys worth.

  • +2

I'm onto my second pair - the first pair lasted 12 years of pro use.

These are superb headphones. Lovely flat response, and supremely comfortable.

If I'm ever asked what cans to buy, 95% of the time my answer will be DT770s (the other 5% for DT990s).

    • +7

These aren't flat. Recessed mids and elevated treble and bass. Dt880 is flat and has less sibilance.

Spend abit more for the 880. It's basically 90% as good as the T1 flagship

  • +1

Which of the 32 or 80OHM to buy…Will mainly be used on a PC for music. I don't have a DAC at the moment but have been looking at picking one up.
    Thanks.

    • +4

80ohm should be fine for your use. Would only opt for the 32ohm if I was using them mainly on portable devices without additional amplification. My usage is similar to yours and I'll be ordering the 80ohm (use them for gaming and music on a PC, running off a Asus Zonar D1 sound card).

OP, I have to both thank you and curse you.

Thank you, because I am pulling the trigger on these- fantastic price for what were for many years my 'grail' headphone that I thought I'd never own.

Curse you, because I'm meant to be saving money right now. Will just have to sell some things to justify the purchase ;-)

    • Thanks Bentan, purchased. $499 @ Addicted to Audio Vs $205 Amazon UK. Will be interesting to compare them to my HD650s…

      • +1

I think the premium ones are $499 the pros are $308.

        • I stand corrected. Still not fussed, definitely worth a listen from the reviews. Seems better for rock and movies than the HD650s. Two pairs left…

        • +1

          rock

          Have you looked at Grado/Alessandro?

        • @bentan77:
I have a sickness and have SR125s too. Grado's are great! Very thick cable though, and no good for portable. I mainly use them on my HAM / Shortwave Radio's these days, and they really shine.

        • +1

          @mostlygordon:
Grabbed a pair too :)…I mainly listen to Metal/rock music.
$180 for me paying in GBP

        • @bbourizk:
We should compare notes. Excited to check some Metallica & Iron Maiden out on the new cans!

        • @mostlygordon:
I like your choice of music :)…Early Metallica for me though.

I'm using mine on a PC and as I edit photos I have tunes going. I'm looking at the Fiio 10k DAC

        • nd@bbourizk:
Early for me too, plus Load, and there is always Sepultra;-) I have an E10K too, and Geek Out 1000. But my best cheap buy is an Audio Ocean amp. If you have a good DAC in your phone / tablet / lappy, what bliss! I have higher end gear too, but finding cheap stuff that sounds great is my passion lol

        • @mostlygordon:
These days with young ones my music listening is confined to late nights on a PC. I have a decent home theatre set up that I use when the mrs and kids are away (very rarely). Love blasting some old metal (Like Sepultra's Arise), Testaments Souls of Black, etc.

        • @bbourizk:
Roots, bloody roots, is all I can say. Check out the Audio Ocean, it sounds awesome on my SG6, Macs, and my secret weapon a run out Surface 2 RT which secretly has the best DAC of any tablet I've heard.

        • +1

          @bbourizk:
Yeah I run an E07K through my PC, lovely clean headphone amp.

        • @beyondtool:
Ordered the 10k earlier before seeing your comment…I'll see how that goes.

        • @bbourizk:
You wont be disappointed. Also works on Android with an OTG cable.

        • +1

          @mostlygordon:
Got the fiio 10k today and using it as I type this. Why the (profanity) didn't I get something like this earlier. I'm using it with my current headphones Audio technica ATH-M50 and they sound heaps better than the on-board Audio on My PC.

Look forward to receiving DT990 and see how they go.

  • thanks :)
    grabbed one

  • Man, these are great prices for a great pair. Not sure if I'm looking for closed cans at the moment.

  • +2

If the Beyers are outside ones price range I'll rave to anyone and their dog about the amazing Takstar Hi2050 Headphones: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Hot-Original-Genuine… Far better than most $200 headphones.

    • My 13 year old has been asking for headphones lately. Maybe a pair of these might be good to start him off with.

      • The above link is what you want for your boy. The Pro 80's are the closed version of the hi2050's… and the Hyper X cloud Core are Pro 80's, with a microphone which he will no doubt use while playing video games (or can remove).

        • Thanks mate. A microphone works be good. He does play some games online.

  • Ah, the coiled, long and non detachable cable makes me think twice!
Anybody got suggestions for a similar sounding, more portable closed headphone?

    • +1

      Cord is straight, not coiled.

If bass on the go is what you are after, the Koss PortaPros are well regarded (and much cheaper). Just a bit odd to look at

      http://www.amazon.com/Koss-PortaPro-Headphones-with-Case/dp/…

      • i have two pairs of porta pros and they're amazing. Sound and build quality is the best for that price, very good bass and lightweight so comfy if you have to wear for a long time. I love using them for jogging, due to being open ear you can still hear traffic around you.

compared to more expensive headphones you wont find a very large soundstage here, but otherwise they're great value for money

      • Thanks for that.
Was looking to get some over-ears though!

        • +1

the ATH-M50X is probably the most popular and recommended headphone around the same price. It's a portable closed alternative.

        • +1

well if you want similar sounding, Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro is probably going to be the closest! it's basically a more consumer orientated version of the DT-770 Pro 80.

has a detachable cable and is much better for portable use, but doesn't fold unfortunately.

^otherwise, yeah, M50X is the obvious one that comes to mind.

        • did some looking and found Takstar Pro 80 is a Chinese copy that sounds almost the same for half the price. Can get velour replacement pads from a HM5 model, however that would bring the price to 3/4 of the DT770.

Also just realised the 32's coiled cable is shorter at 1.6m compared to 3 in the others

        • @Infy_AsiX:
          Thanks man!
Just got the M50X a couple of hours ago, thanks to the other guys above^^ as well.
Now searching for some velour pads.

        • @Rorschach:
something to note though is any material changes in pads affects sound

  • is the DT990 Pro the next model up?

    • +1

No, the 770/880/990 are three different series of headphones with differing designs and features. Equivalent models from each series are typically sold for around the same price.

  • +1

Thanks. I only wanted some eneloops and ending up buying the 770 32ohms.

  • It says "Sorry, we can't deliver this item to Australia". How are you people ordering them?

    • Some 3rd party sellers can't ship outside the UK. Try adding the ones sold by amazon.co.uk, it's a little more in this case, but they ship internationally.

  • Can anyone offer some advice on the difference between the 32 and 80ohm varients? And why the former costs more for less ohm(s?)?

I'm interested in purchasing a pair for general PC use (listening to music etc) and gaming in the future.

no idea why 32Ohm is more expensive. From the review; 32Ohm doesnt sound as good as the other ones. IMHO there is no reason to buy the 32Ohm as they arent that much easier to power than the 80 or 250Ohm versions, much better off going to latter options.

      • Thanks, my next question would be if there are any Sennheiser equivalents as I can currently can get their products at a hefty discount.

  • Are these headphones a good fit for people with large heads?

  • Just got shipping notification… Looking forward to trying them out.

  • Thanks been meaning to get a pair, thank god i waited around. I got a pair of DT770 80Ohm, it cost me $181.61 AUD via Citibank Visa.

  • -3

I purchased one of these two years ago. Not only it does not have noise canceler, but also it spreads the sound out very well; others can hear the music very well! One of its good point is that it is very comfortable on ears.

All in all, I don't recommend it.

  • Can't delivered to Australia any more?
It changed status just now, between going to other page and coming back.

  • These are great - I've got a pair about a decade or more old, used them for radio announcing, use at the PC, etc. Still awesome.

  • Can anyone recommend a sound card for these bad boys? Or is the stock sound card on my PC good enough?

    • The 32 and 80 models will run fine. The 250s you are probably better off amping.

A decent soundcard will definitely help, even if you don't strictly 'need' one. I've got a Xonar Essence STX, and it is pretty great. Fully shielded, great TI op-amp stage (which you can tinker with, if you really want), Burr Brown DAC and ADC onboard and ridiculously clean SNR (118db input, 124db output) vs 104/110 for a decent onboard module, more like 90/97 for a generic realtek.

The new one is like $450, but you can generally pick up one of the series 1 models for dirt cheap on ebay.

  • +1

Beyerdynamic T90 also on special , around $440 delivered.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyerdynamic-90-beyerdynamic-High-En…

    around $700 locally

    • I friggin love my T90s. 95% of a T1 at a half (or, in this case, a quarter!) of the price.

As long as you like the Beyer sound signature, they are a pro++ buy.

      • yes ordered one. hope it will work with OPPO HA-2.

  • +1

I have too many headphones :(

  • Thanks….been umming and arring about these for a few years. Pulled the trigger.

  • After days of debating, I finally decided to buy them. Can't wait to try them

Best headphones I've used are Logitech g430 so it should be a decent step up

  • I paid over $300 for mine a few years back. As most Beyer stuff they are built like a tank and most parts are user serviceable and easily found online. Exception is the cable, but it's pretty rugged.

They are closed, isolate sound really well. The Pros have a strong clamp compared to the 770 premiums. Soundstage isn't bad for closed cans.

In terms of sound. Good bass, a little boomy, treble is a little fatiguing. Great for gaming, movies and Electronic and Hip Hop. If you listen to rock and classic, you might want a more neutral headphone, like the DT880, T90 or DT1350 if you want something portable.

  • I would actually go for Beyer DT250's over the DT770's for portable listening. They are easier to drive (80ohms comparison) and a bit smaller/more portable.

I wasn't satisfied with my 770's via an iPod, so I got the DT250's and I've been using them on multiple devices for 8 years now.

  • Received the 990's today.
Will put then to use tonight.

    • From Amazon UK? It says it arrives the 29th for me.

      • Mine said same thing…checked yesterday online and it said it was half way but today they rocked up.

A few things I've ordered from Amazon UK, USA and Germany rock up before the estimated day.

I'm in country Vic if that helps and ordered same day deal was posted.

        • Sweet, hopefully mine arrives earlier then. Really looking forward to trying these, never any deals for a dac/amp..

        • @iLoveYourFace:

I purchased a Fiio 10k desktop amp and the difference was night and day from my Audio Technica ATH-M50. Now I want a better DAC/AMP but some prices are crazy.

Just plugged in the dt990 and so far so good. Listening to Iron Maiden's Latest Album in FLAC format.

  • Got mine (770's) on Friday. The sound is pretty scooped, but that suits me. I think they sound fantastic. And the design does block out a fair bit of room noise. Waaaay better than those laughable House of Marley noise-cancelling headphones that came up a few weeks ago. Gonna be flogging those off asap.

    • they're so comfortable physically for long use but the treble is a little too much for extended exposure I feel. I equalised the highs down 3dB and I'm good on my 80ohm. Hard to imagine how much treble there's in the others and dt880/990 when the 80ohm has the least of the bunch.

    • also got those House of Marley NC headphones on ozbargain - sound pretty poor with the NC off, better with the NC on but a notable hiss (more than an old pair of NC headphones I have)

Comfort is ok but a little tight for my big noggin - have a couple of 10c coins strategically placed to open up the head band a bit. Alright I guess but the idea that people paid hundreds of dollars for these is shocking. I really want to get the 770s as well - not sure what the second hand market for the Marley's is going to be like. If you're happy to do so, let us know what you got for them.

  • Got mine today (80ohm).

Sounds fantastic even on my work computer with fairly standard onboard sound. Can't wait to try out on my home gear.
Will have to hunt down some FLACs, although my A State of Trance episodes are fairly high bitrate :-)

Noise isolation is pretty impressive- will probably get me in trouble at home as I won't hear the wife / toddler calling me…

Thanks again OP for letting us know about the deal.

  • After a few days of listening to the 990s my ATH-M50 sound better with the fiio DAC I'm using. Not sure if it's because the 990's been 250ohm. I'm really no expert. Tonight I'll plug them into my pioneer amp that I use for a home theatre and see if it helps drive then better.

    • I've only used them on my Geekout 1000 and they sound great. More bass than the HD650s, but so well defined. There is a place for both these cans for me, but will probably use the 990s more.

      • On my pioneer amp they sound way better than the fiio. This was just streaming a couple of songs via Chromecast audio. So now even the best source.

  • 80 ohms show up as 100 pounds for me. Too late?

    • never mind. didnt seem to work on phone for some reason

  • Thank you so much OP! Ordered the 80s
