Advice Needed Moving Interstate Tas to Vic

Hey guys, I've always been a silent ozbargainer but I guess I have to draw on the great strength of ozbargain this time. Me and my wife is going to move interstate coz I got a better job and I've been weighing out my options whether to

A. Sell all our existing furniture and white goods and move over to buy new stuff

B. Backloading everything and move over.

We just got married and moved in together on Dec 2014 and I've gotten most of the furniture's and white goods then, which still are under warranty & extended warranty (we were planning that they would stay with us till we have kids)

The list of stuff is
4 seated L shaped sofa bed
Entertainment unit
6 seated dining tables & chairs
Matching coffee table
2 bookshelf's
1 king sized plush mattress
1 double bed
420L Mitsubishi refrigerator
8.5kg front loading washing machine
6kg dryer
4 bedside tables
1 floor lamps
2 bedside lamps

They are all bought new (apart from the double bed) and cost up about 8k up front.

We are planning to do the move around mid of May, we haven't found a place to rent yet at this stage but we have in mind that it's going to be around Oakleigh 2 bedroom unit.

I have submitted a few quotes on back loading but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

We have about 3k to spend (which we need to consider spending on bond and rent for the new place until we get back the bond of the current place we're living in)

Help please?

I would look objectively at your furniture, particularly the large items, and work out how attached you are to them. Finding furniture will not be hard in Victoria but setting up a new house again so soon is a bit of a pain. Certainly Google any company you are considering to see if there are negative reviews out there and get some references for people they have moved, particularly if they have handled interstate moves. Also ask them about their insurance policy on damage and loss.

Welcome to the mainland, you are going to love it. Melbourne has the most wonderful cafe culture and Oakleigh is not a bad place to setup shop. I think you are going to get a bit of a shock with the cost of real estate and rents so do your homework. Enjoy.

    • Thanks for the advice! I've looked into the rents and it doesn't seem too much difference with what I'm currently paying so it's alright

I also suggest being very very careful about which moving company you select. The big name ones may be cheaper but the service is poor - furniture can be passed along to sub-contractors along the way to your new abode. Put the word out there and ask others which company they used when they moved to the mainland - pay more for good service with peace of mind that your furniture will be looked after and arrive intact. I would go with a small company that provides great door-to-door service.
Good Luck in your new venture! :)

  • I used Santa Fe Wridgeways to move from Melbourne to Perth and I was really happy with their service and price. Toll operates a vessel that moves cargo between Tasmania & Victoria, this could be an option as well if you organise a removalist to and from the vessel.
