$56 for a stubby of beer!! - Mikkellar

had dinner at Dr Morse in Collingwood the other night.

noticed a beer - Mikkellar "show me cuvee" Sour Ale Belgium beer from Denmark.

$56!!

that's more than 2 cases of Rivet beer from Aldi!

I understand paying $56 for a bottle of wine or more for a bottle of fine champagne (I've drunk very fine champagne and I understand).

but for a beer!

am I missing something here?

is this like paying $600,000 for a car because you can?

  • Did a quick search, show 27 pounds in Edinburgh Scotland. Just an expensive beer i suppose.

  • +2

I'm guessing it was a 750ml bottle. With restaraunt markup that isn't that strange. Good sour beers can fetch $40 here in a bottlo. I've bought a few $40 bottles myself.

The thing you're missing is assuming there isn't as much of a variance in flavour and quality in beer as there is in wine.

  • No way would I buy it at that price but you should be aware that it's:

    1. A limited release, brewed once, and initially only distributed in Missouri.
    2. Aged in oak (usually for at least three years for a beer like this but I can't say for sure in this case).

Given point 2 and the complexity of making a good beer in this style, I don't see why these types of beers shouldn't be priced the same as wine and I'd say that point 1 has doubled the normal price.

If you want a try a beer with the complexity of wine (but obviously a different flavour), I'd definitely recommend this one. Crisp, not too sour, very nice:

  • I'm guessing you guys are all too young to remember the Darwin Stubby? Now that was a man sized beer! ;)

  • If you like a a good beer or a dozen suggest fly to Europe and indulge :)
A couple of Recommendations: Jever ( Germany ), Budweiser (the real Czech, not the US equestrian excess fluid)
