  • Are these any good?
Was thinking to get bike rack for our i30

    • Think you have to own a VW Golf to be allowed to purchase one of these!

I have a Corolla hatch '06 and I am finding is great. The bike rack itself is not bulky and fits my kids bikes.

I would suggest to take a bike to a local store, and get a sales staff to let you try it first before ordering online. Getting the bikes racked might be a challenge the first time.

      • Only for kids bikes?
Or his and hers mtb bikes?

        • For any bike. As long as both bikes are under the load capacity of 30kg.

So you are suggesting go to a local bike shop and ask them to spend their time helping you decide if the rack will fit your car and your kids bikes………….then go home and order it cheaper online? That is pretty low in my book!

If you want cheap bike stuff bargains on the internet (and I have spent a small fortune buying bike stuff online) then you should do your own research, if you want personal help from a small business paying local employees then you should pay local rates for the service. If you are going to buy online then you take the chance, if you want somebody to come and look at your bikes and your car and recommend the best fit then you should buy from the person giving that advice. We all love a bargain but don't expect other people to pay for your shopping research.

Maybe email the rack manufacturer to ask if this model fits your car or maybe call their helpline but dont expect a local bikeshop owner to do it for you so you can then just give them the finger and order from CRC.

I wouldnt recommend using a rack like this for carbon fibre framed bikes. The clamps that go onto the top tube and hold the bike in place could damage the carbon and the structural integrity of the frame. If you have carbon fibre framed bikes you need an upright frame that supportsts the bike's weight via the wheels, something like http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/thule-e-class-g6-3-…

    • … or some cheaper ones here and here (currently out of stock) that don't have the integrated light fittings.

    • Don't think so.
Have been using one of these racks for years, with both my carbon fibre bikes - road and MTB.
Driven over some rough 4WD tracks too.
The 'clamps' are well-made, well-designed, rubber.
Be interested to know how this rubber could damage the structural integrity of the frame….

      • You must have a great carrier then. I had a different brand version of this same style of towbar mounted rack and the clamps gouged a groove out of the top tube of my Aluminium framed FS MTB. That was enough for me to avoid ever putting the carbon roadie on it. I have the roofrack mounted upright Thule carrier now.

I bought 1 of these from 99 bikes on the weekend and only paid $149 club price.

Nice bike carrier and snaps on and folds away easily. It was a bit of fidling around working how to fit 2 adult bikes on it initially but the mounts are fully positional and hold really well.
