Buying Lenovo Laptop overseas

I've been trying to score an X1 carbon 4th gen and a T460s ever since they've been announced. I've been paying attention to their prices and the deals that they've had on them were pretty rare or not really that huge of a saving.

Now, I've discovered that buying them from Lenovo US or Lenovo HK give a significant savings. Anywhere from 200-700 AUD savings. As Lenovo has helpfully mentioned to me, their warranties are international by default, I'm now investigating this option.

Considering I have friends and family in both places that could ship the machines to me, what are the things that I need to be aware of, if I ultimately decide to go this route?

  • As with everything in Australia, we tend to get ripped off here for no reason other than "just because they can"…

If you can get your hands on the same "something" that's considerably cheaper overseas from a reputable company like Lenovo, I'd say go for it. It's been years since I've bought any electronics of significance from an australian retailer.

With Dell, I just have to replace the american cable and plug with an AU one, which costs $10.

You can just buy a Australian power adapter if you can't detach the cable from the power brick. No big deal.

  • Thanks folks. It looks like it's pretty straightforward then. I was just worried I might have missed something.

Lenovo Thinkpad warranty is international. Mine was purchased from Singapore. No issues with the power, only the wall plug leads need to purchase and you can get them on ebay.

And nagel has a point; import charges unless someone bringing it in and ditching the box carton.

    good work horse they are
