Complimentary education and training: skills for tomorrow
Free education and training at Sydney TAFE can give you a taste of a trade, an advantage in your apprenticeship or traineeship, or a career head-start. Most free courses are in career areas targeted by government as priorities under Smart and Skilled.
All fee-free courses aim to give you an invaluable boost in your current or new career. They may also connect you with higher-level courses, so after your free course you may be able to get credit towards the full qualification if you continue on that pathway.

Eligible for a fee-free course?
To enrol in a fee-free course you must:

be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder, or New Zealand citizen
be aged 15 years or older have completed year 10 (or its equivalent) and be eligible to leave school

have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

What is that? So only students are eligible?

    • +1

The Unique Student Identifier or USI is a reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters that:

creates a secure online record of your recognised training and qualifications gained in Australia, even from different training organisations
will give you access to your training records and transcripts (available in mid 2016)
can be accessed online, anytime and anywhere
is free and easy to create and
      stays with you for life
      More info at
      https://www.usi.gov.au/about

  • Please correct the name of the university in the title.

    • Done, thanks

  • Is a USI for life? I got one that hasn't been used in nearly 10 years.

    • USI was launched only a few years ago. It stands for unique student identifier so one person is assigned only one USI.

      • -1

so we need usi to get this free course or we can take this free course and get usi?

        • +2

USI is easy enough to get from the online portal. I think it gives it to you instantly.

        • you need to register a USI in order to do the enrollment of free courses.

        • -1

@xmas tree: and where to register for usi?

        • +1

          @eisniwre:

          I just googled

          where to register for usi?

and it was the first link that came up.

I would hazard a guess that it's quicker and easier to find yourself than ask someone else to do it for you…and then have them come back here and post a link for you.

Statement of Attainment in Provide First Aid is free

    • Nice.

    • Yeah this is cool but only available day time in Ultimo and it's next monday :(. Well theres loftus but sooo farrr

    • I need a first aid certificate for work placement, will this course be recognised?

  • Is it only the 1st course that is free? Can I enrol in & attend multiple courses at the same time given there are no timetable clashes?

    • the courses should be free as long as you satisfy the eligibility and have a USI. I have done a few free courses last year.

      • +1

Nice! Thanks for verifying! Off to learn the art of barista & the first aid just incase anyone has a seizure from my coffee…

      • +1

That's ok though cause you can't escape that

    • Is it still available? If not where is the cheapest place I can do it at?

  • Thanks. I just pre-enrolled myself into database system design.

    • nice, i tried to do the CISCO one, and it takes me to some food and alcohol course!

      • I spoke to the people involved, some of the other links were wrong too - it seems to be fixed now :-)

University of Altomic provides free degrees in :

    Lawn mowing
Getting a cold beer out if the fridge

    Post grad degree:
Mate, can you look after the kids as I've got a hot tip for the TAB.

    And the popular PhD:
Mate, its 2am and I'm drunk and broke, can you pick me up from the pub.

  • Are these free courses online or is it about actual attending?

  • +1

Don't limit yourself to Sydney Tafe. There are numerous RTO's in NSW who provide the same thing. Check here: https://smartandskilled.nsw.gov.au

If you've wanted your RSA's, it's $70 through this deal (cheapest otherwise is ~$100)

  • might wanna put NSW only in the title.

    • +3

For those who are confused with all the other Sydney locations around the country

      • for those who thought these were online courses that could be accessed around Australia.

        • Ah l see

        • The OTEN ones can be accessed from anywhere, but the NSW resident requirement is the thing of note.

Theres a free Cisco course provided in that link but when you click on the link it takes you to a alcohol and beverage site.

Does anyone know if a cisco course is actually provided or was this just a mistake?

    • +1

I already reported it to TAFE NSW

      • Thanks, can you update this page if you get a reply please.

        • +1

I spoke to the people involved - this issue and some other broken links have now been fixed :-)

And NO, it is NOT a mistake - the Cisco course is now linked correctly.

It's actually really good value - the Cisco course could easily cost $2,000 at some providers.

          @oz-dave: Thanks!!

  • Do they have French classes?

  • I think this is the same offer that Hunter TAFE has as well. http://www.hunter.tafensw.edu.au/students/pages/feefreecours…

  • The website keeps crashing

    • OzLearninged

  • Is this restricted only to people who don't already have a uni degree? I'd originally thought it was only for school leavers, but now am not sure.

  • +1

Does anybody know of anything similar to this running in Victoria?

    • I was wondering the same; hope there's something similar for Victorian Ozbargainers!

      • better move to nsw, weather is better here. well not today 14/4/16 but in general :D

        • +1

haha; so weather and TAFE courses = state relocation. I happen to be one of the weird and rare ones and love the weather in Melbourne. Love NSW though; gorgeous state.

  • hmmm, i applied to ultimo tafe. called them and apparently with the government funding, to be eligible must be under 30 years of age. some of the training sites explain this under eligibility but not clearly outlined on all of them

    • That is NOT the case for all the courses - which course did you apply for?

  • -3

can you get a student card out of this?!?!?!?!

  • doh i want excel and cisco but both are on saturdays!
