"Requested by OP" reason?

So I was watching the deal posted this evening about $20 mystery movie tickets offered. After a few hours being away from the computer, I tried to find it again only to see it was no longer published with the reason being "Requested by OP".

Last time I saw the deal, it was at +3, -4 votes.

This isn't the first time I have noticed this. Many times, as soon as the discussion gets sidetracked into about where one can get the item cheaper or a store that has better service, the deal gets taken down with this being the reason.

So my question is, what is the reason? My only guess is that the OP feels like the negatively received deal might "tarnish their image"?

Many times, I feel though that the comments have useful links/information/discussion that should actually remain preserved for future reference rather than be taken down. Just because a deal isn't positively received doesn't mean that everyone hates the OP…

  • doesn't mean that everyone hates the OP…

"$20 for a movie ticket" is why it was going pear shaped…Lol

    • Agreed, but there was an interesting discussion about popcorn and my comment got a + vote from JV which I didn't have time to screenshot :(

Yes..a very rare event, if you ask the mods nicely they might send you a copy.😄

This post has gone off topic…I might request the mods to remove it.

We assess each request on a case by case basis. Generally, if the deal or forum post has value:

    • a good amount of useful comments (e.g. not this deal sucks…)
    • OR a good amount of votes
    • OR the post has been published for a good amount of time

    then the deal will remain.

In the cited deal Village Cinemas: $20 Mystery Movie Ticket with Money Back Guarantee - Wed 13 Apr @ 7pm [VIC+TAS], it had:

    • Numerous comments with the majority guesses of what the movie would be.
    • -1 votes (net)
    • posted for a little more than an hour.

I'd hazard a guess that most of the time that an OP requests removal, it is because they didn't think it through and realized it's not a deal.

In February, 35 deals & forum posts (out of 3573) were removed due to being Requested by OP. This is a rate of about .97%.

EDIT: Village Cinemas link for those interested.

United States Territory of Australia :D

          From here:

Although realize is now regarded by many in the U.K. and Australasia as the American spelling, it is not an Americanism. In fact, the -ize spelling variant is older than –ise—realize predates the United States and Canada by nearly two centuries—and has been the preferred spelling throughout most of the word’s history in English.

        • @neil: Well I just got told ;)

          New to me.
