Printing a Large Canvas from File

Hi,

Im looking at getting a large canvas print. A good option oppose to ebay and canvas factories appears to be to use an image from google and have it printed at Big W with their current deals.

Im looking at getting 20" x 30". I have found the image I like. There are two of them, which is better to use.

No.1
File JPG
size 1.15 mb
Dimensions 3008 x 2256
Width 3008 pixels
depth 2256 pixels
horizontal resolution 120dpi
vertical resolution 120dpi
bit depth 24

No 2.
File PNG
size 3.34 mb
dimensions 1920 x 1080
width ?
depth?
bit depth 32

The image has a lot of bright colours but is quite simple and not detailed. Though there are a lot of smooth lines
I originally thought the larger file would be better, but just by zooming in on the image on the computer scren the smaller one seems clearer and less pixelated. Also the black in the larger one actually shows greyish pixels.

Then again I have no idea what it all means when it comes to printing.

Thanks in advance

make the image is yours or you have the rights to print the pic. I remember seeing a home show and the were just going to do what you want but the store said no, must have rights to the photo.

  • Based purely on resolution/DPI the first one is the better option

    1st one (20" x 26") = 113dpi
    2nd one (16.875" X 30") = 64dpi

You should be aiming for an image that is 300dpi+, although as you rightly point out it can be very dependent on the image you're printing (and also the settings on the printer and RIP)

    • Canvas prints you can often get away with 200ppi, since the surface texture confuses things anyway. Even 150ppi can look OK from a distance, but 113ppi is a bit low.

Oh, and the actual ppi of the first one is less and 100ppi (do the maths and account for the wraparound). Second one is less than 60ppi.

To the OP, you are comparing a JPG with a PNG, lossy vs loseless. No. 1 will be better, but neither are great for a canvas print of that size. You should really be looking for a bigger than 6000x4000 image. If you are going to steal them from Google, set the size to "larger than 20MP" in the image search.

  • In my experience, both of those images would look awful printed out on a large canvas.
