Information from the CEO of NQR - Mr. Grant Parker

Hi rawm,

Thankyou for your support of NQR .

The Sunshine store is closing due to the centre being developed . We are end of lease and most retailers are now out of this centre.

Glenroy store lease has expired and we are focusing our efforts on our ware house store which is in Broadmeadows. The Broadmeadows store has the same great range and will serve the customers of Glenroy and Broadmeadows in the same way our famous Glenroy store has over the years .

These closures are not the beginning of the end but part of our persistent efforts to ensure we are around for a very long time to come. We have renewed 4 leases this year alone . Newcombe , Chelsea, Hastings and Ashburton.

NQR has fantastic brands at incredible prices . Our new buying manager and our great buying team have transformed our offer to be best in the market . Our customers are loving it .

Our Dairy and Freezer product has never been better and we are focused on expanding our service lines and grocery offer to ensure our smart and loyal shoppers get the best deals every week.

Most importantly we want to make sure that every day we help Victorian families have excellent food in their homes at an incredible price and have a community based friendly store to shop in .

Please join us on face book and thank you again for your support .

    Best grocery store around :)

Slab of pear cider for $6 is very cheap.

    • But where do you actually find it? It sold out within 2 days when it was on that special a few weeks ago.

      • Only just got to a store today, still had plenty in stock.

    Store in Sunshine is closed

    • I went there yesterday and saw that too :(
I wonder why it shut down? It was often busy and it's not like the rent in that space was expensive (there's plenty of vacant space in the same shopping centre).

      • +1

Rent has gone up - so much so it's cheaper to rent at Highpoint than it is at Sunshine Plaza (words from a NQR staff member last Saturday). The same staff member mentioned there's hope they'll open another store nearby, possibly Deer Park (which I presume may be Brimbank Central), and suggested to follow their Facebook page for updates. The rent increase explains why other shops have already closed, or are soon to close, their doors at Sunshine Plaza.

I assume the rent increases are related to the purchase of Sunshine Plaza last year for $35m, either expecting more rent money or are simply forcing them out for their own future plans for the space.

        • I bet another shitty residential apartment is coming.

        • Damn, the fact Highpoint can be cheaper than Sunshine Plaza means something is wrong. Sunshine Plaza is nothing fancy at all. Wouldn't surprise me if it is turned into residential. There's a shopping centre right across the road that has room to expand and Brimbank council wants to turn Sunshine into a much denser area. Ah well, end of an era - I remember my mum taking me to do the Target that used to be there, hah.

      • +2

The Sunshine store closed down due to the rent being too high for them to operate. The shopping centre is receiving a makeover with new LED lighting, full CCTV security and other updates. I talked to the management about trying to keep NQR going but he said NQR chose to go regardless of their efforts to make a deal.

There is talk of a new store opening in Maribyrnong and there will no doubt be info on their Facebook page and probably an advert in the local newspaper about it when/if the time comes.

I've been going to NQR since I was a little boy in the 1980s. When they were in West Melbourne, my friend and I discovered that every night after they would close they would throw out hundreds of iced donuts and other food products in the bins out the back, so we'd hang around playing on our skateboards every day after school, waiting for that moment around 5 pm when they would come out and dump it, then we'd go in and take heaps and heaps to munch on around the corner out of sight.

Edit: I should mention that they would throw out so much stuff that they'd leave the overflow stacked up next to the bin in piles, and that's what we'd get.

    • Really? That was an awesome store (only went there once but nonetheless, awesome)!

The Glenroy store (789 Pascoe Vale Rd, Glenroy) Closed down too on Easter Sunday. Fingers' crossed it's not the beginning of the end. I'll do some investigations and report back.

        • Hi Grant, thanks for commenting here.
Currently there is a big "hole" in the shop network south between Ashburton and Chelsea, quite a distance. I think you used to have a site somewhere around Moorabin.
          Any plans to open another?

        • They really need a new store somewhere in the inner western suburbs now.

        • @King Tightarse: I will pass this on in another email to Grant tomorrow; sorry mate I should've been clearer that this was a C&P from an email Grant sent me (and authorised that I spread the news).

        • @rawm:
          Hey thanks!
I live bayside so I either drive up to Ashburton or down to Chelsea but usually end up with melted food on hot days unless I organise Esky with ice ready.
Somewhere between Moorabin and Springvale on the east west axis would fill the "hole" in the map and reach a lot of people,

@King Tightarse: I'll pass this information on. I'm spoiled personally; I live about 10mins from the Broadmeadows Headquarters (and the old Glenroy store too). I'll get back to you with Grant's response.

    • What? That NQR was always busy. I guess it needed a renovation. Last time I went there, the efptos machine wouldn't take my AMEX card, so that might have been a clue.

      • +1

Considering groceries make a tiny margin of a few % it's no surprise they don't take Amex, who charges retailers around 2-3% to process payment so cardholders can score points. That margin is like most of their profit lol.

Amex kills merchants in order to reward crd holders.

        • +1

          Most NQR stores take AMEX.

    • -1

Probably too many break-ins and stabbings.

    At the cheese factory…

"Boss boss, Harry had the preservative at three times the correct level on batch 74."
    "No worries Frank"
"OK people mark Batch 74 to go to NQR"

    • +5

Classic! If you are smart though, you can pick up stock that basically falls into 3 categories

      1. Wasn't popular (eg too spicy, not received well by consumers, didn't make forcasted sales) and brand/company has offloaded it to NQR for cheap
      2. Is stock that while Passed Use By Date, is still fine to consume (usually limited to cereals, sauces, chocolates, soft drinks)
      3. Batch mistakes (e.g overcooked Brownies in the recent Ben and Jerry's deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/218311)

Don't think NQR is this crusty shonky place where rotten food is flipped to the lowest in society; think of it as an untapped resource. Be smart and you'll save a heap.

      • +2

Yeah I go there all the time for the Dish'd food because I know its just unsold regular stock:)
It's scenario 3 the "batch mistake" that worries me though.
That's why I don't buy anything else there.

        • batch mistake is usually something much more tame than the ice cream example given above.

its usually something like jelly baby candy that had an error with the cutting machine so they dont have legs (big whoop)

or some problem with colouring or packaging errors.

usually anything that has ANYTHING to do with taste is already put in the bin at the factory.
Im actually surprised that they let the ben/jerry's ice cream go through

      • From your description it sounds like the food is bad tasting, low quality and could not meet the requirements of a supermarket that the non-lowest in society might frequent …

        • +2

Take of that what you will; one person's loss is another's gain. Ive shopped there for years and if you are discerning (e.g Dish'd range as mentioned by King Tightarse) you'll be vert happy.

  • +1

Ha ha I like the suspicious quote marks on vodka and fortified wine.

    • +3

They were my little addition :) A product called DOVKA (fortified wine) has gotta be dodgy. But for many who have $10 and a desire to drink will clearly see the words VODKA; their brains will automatically unscramble the letters!

I just got JINDI Triple Ceam Brie http://shop.coles.com.au/online/national/jindi-triple-cream-…
& Sandhurst Double Cream Camembert. any 2 for $5. (Newcomb, Geelong)
    It's probably storewide.

    • +1

I've seen this one at the Broadmeadows store before - I was going to post this as a deal, but as it's not promoted anywhere I've held off. I'll try and confirm if it's state wide :)

Message from CEO (Mr. Grant Parker) 14.4.16

      Hi rawm,

      Hope that helps.

Let me know if you need any further info.

      Enjoy!

Hey rawn, I went up to Ashburton at lunchtime and scored some Camembert thanks to you!
They had very little Dish'd food though - freezer were nearly empty. I asked and the guys there and they said there were very few lines available to order now.
I wonder if it's coming to an end? I love that food.

        • +2

Good to hear! Yep Dish'd stocks are running low and wont be replenished unfortunately - grab it all while you can!
My freezer is full of the Blueberry Tarts and the Gnocchi :) Ive eaten all the Raspberry tarts; they were insane.

        • +1

          @rawm:
So that's a definite then on the end of the dish'd era?
All good things must come to an end I suppose but I certainly hope they have those lines again. It was the exact motivation that made me go to nqr.
