Providers with easy number porting process?

Hi,
I'm looking at seeing if any phone provider provides online (or easy) number porting process, I'm with Amaysim and recently had to go through porting with calling Vodafone, nothing against them (yet), but I'd prefer not having to call, then say a bunch of numbers through the phone, wait for them to confirm it, then ask for the same numbers again later, took me quite a while.
I personally prefer Amaysim's way of doing it, enter all my details online and wait. And in order to avoid going through the painful process of calling the provider to port my number, can I ask for any provider that wouldn't require me calling in? Spelling my name and address multiple times is a bit tiring to do…

PS: My reason for doing it is to chase discounts, so I'm looking for options (you don't need to give me a provider with an active discount, I just need providers with online porting process)

I went from Amaysim to Optus and everything was done online I'm pretty sure.

IIRC, the procedure was the following:

    1) Made order online at Optus, chose to keep number, entered all details etc.
    2) Waited for Optus sim (~2 days)
    3) Opened Optus sim, typed in some numbers online
    4) Waited until the amaysim sim stopped working (within an hour)
    5) Changed sim cards

Alright, thank you, I'll keep them in mind.

You can activate vodafone online. Pretty much most carriers that I'm aware of allow activation online. Google is your friend https://www.google.com.au/search?q=online+sim+activation&oq=…

    • Yes, I could activate Vodafone online, but going through there, they told me I can only port my number if I call them… unless there was a small text somewhere. And… well, I wanted some opinions, too.

      • I wanted some opinions, too.

What sort of opinions? "Hey rep, what do you think of the latest Gizmo phone?" :)

        • Nah, not that much, I at least know the basic stuffs. But rather, the porting process, I wanted to see that despite even a simple instruction, Vodafone said on their getting started page "Call us and it'll probably take 10-15 minutes", I ended up nearly an hour with them on the phone going through 2 service reps. I want to avoid wasting time like that.

@Ryuverlorene: TBH, the last time I ported via voice call was before Android phones came onto the market. I had Nokia candy bar phone then. (Still have it, great phone.) I'd be very surprised if any mobile operator doesn't have online activation. Even some of the here today gone next year MVNOs had online activation, even if some peon was getting all the form data.

        • @greenpossum: Yes, that's why I was quite surprised when they flatout said if I want to port, call them, instead of providing an online form, that gave me some doubts so I asked to make sure.

Most providers have similar porting processes, and I would be genuinely astonished if there was something 'non-online' at the consumer end. For prepaid services the identifiers are your name and DOB, with the Account Number being required instead of DOB for postpaid services.

One thing that I would recommend against is porting within the Optus network. By that, I mean refraining from porting directly between Optus, Amaysim and Virgin Mobile. Reason being, these ports are known to require manual intervention and can (but not always) take numerous phone calls and emails to resolve, according to anecdotal reports.

    • I see, I'll remember that, luckily my last Virgin to Amaysim porting went smoothly. And yes, I was surprised when Vodafone told me "Call [number] so we can port your number for you", that's why I got bit paranoid and asked to make sure…

I ported Amaysim to Telstra today. Filled all details on Telstra website and I was up and running on Telstra in 30 minutes.

    • Does it follow that after you port, your Amaysim plan (prepaid or PAYG) is terminated? I have an Amaysim on PAYG from their eBay deal and would like to keep the number but with Telstra

      • Yes, plan terminated since I m out of Amaysim network.

        • So I have to cancel Amaysim plan first, then port the number to Telstra?

@downero: No, don't do that. The porting process will cancel your plan with the losing telco. If prepaid, make sure you use up your credit. If postpaid, be prepared for a final bill, including any leaving penalties, and to pay out any amount owing on mobiles purchased on a plan.

        • @greenpossum: Thanks

    • I see, thank you, I'll remember them.

Buy a prepaid sim with Telstra. Activate the sim online and choose to keep your existing number. It should be done within ~20 minutes. Optus has a similar process but Telstra's has been a lot more smoother.

    • Seems like quite a few liked Telstra's process, they'll be high on my list.

Ports between the same network can be more difficult and often slower too.
When I went from optus to amaysin it took about 20 hours. Then amaysim to boost took around 30 minutes.

  • I used ALDI
took a couple hours and the new sim was active

    I bought sim at aldi
I needed my medicare card number
Licence Number and my current mobile providers account number (Spintel)

the sim was ready when i woke up next day

  • Do ports happen on weekends, too, or only on weekdays?

Porting is system automated only on a Sunday. Porting on a Sunday works if you follow measures I explained in another two posts, but its copy-pasted for you below.

      1) Before porting, call your current provider, and ask your DOB be updated to the backend porting system database, otherwise your port request will be rejected.

Personal details are are not automatically updated for porting out, and need to be manually actuated by an operator.

Internet connectivity will also be barred until midnight of that day. Ensure internet APN settings are correct according to your handset and carrier as specified on this informative website(apn-india.gishan.net). So step one must be done prior to 8pm, then internet will activate after midnight.
