Was looking around for a laptop with a decent graphics card and came across this sale on the Dell website. Seems a decent price for what you get.

There's also the Core i7 version for $1599 delivered, save $300. It's currently on special at JB HiFi for $1613.30 with their 15% off sale. Might be able to get JB to bring the price down the extra $14.

It's a great budget quad core laptop.

You can upgrade the RAM and SSD too. It can play most modern games at medium settings too.
I recommend getting an extra 1 or 2 years warranty. It is an inspiron after all.

but $1,398 isnt really a budget price…. for a Inspiron (not Latitude) that is merely an i5 (!) w/ 1tb 5,400rpm drive (!!) and only 1yr rtb warranty (!!!)… and enjoy lugging 2.5kg around.

Not interested in upgrading a $1,400 laptop… should be complete for the money.

Dell are having a laugh here.

I don't think you know very much about computers.

It has a Core i5-6440HQ Quadcore processor, which is just as fast as the core i7 HQ. You won't notice a difference and the extra $200 for more cache and a slight faster clock speed isn't worth it in my book.

256 GB SSDs cost a $100. Just because you're too lazy to pick up a screwdriver doesn't mean you should discourage others.

This is a consumer laptop. Of course it has 1 year warranty. Same goes for every other consumer laptop from big PC manufacturers.

        Get a business laptop, precious.

It doesn't have one of those dodgy dual core U i5's. Has a quad core i5 and a 960m. Great price for a 960m laptop.

        • -5

i5s are fine. I just expect more for $1.4k. This to me isnt value. The video card is ok but you're better off with something else for that kind of money.

Sorry my opinion doesnt match yours, some of us are obviously easily impressed. I'm even more impressed that people go to bat for 5,400 hdds and crappy warranties. If SSDs are "only $100" then what's Dell's excuse for not including one? I suppose people do eat crap and expect others to as well!

          @tonyjzx:

Find me a laptop that has a quad core CPU and a GTX 960M 4GB DDR5 for the same price from a reputable PC manufacturer.

          @cDNA:

Why? You love this Dell, go buy it. I dont know anything computers man, you said so…

Further to this, adding a SSD isnt as simple as opening and putting the SSD in, there's something about installing an o/s but hey, what would I know…

To be fair. Those U series Intel processors are fantastic and not 'dodgy'. They're used in almost all business laptops, because of their 15 W TDP and can run most software.

I have a US bought, high end Dell Latitude 7000. I don't buy laptops. I get them for free from work every year

Fantastic, can I have your autograph. We use X1 Carbons so we must not be up to your standard.

Yeah, we don't use chinese PCs being an American company.

I wonder where this laptop is made?

          Malaysia

@tonyjzx: actually it is that simple. The ssd goes in the m.2 slot (keeping the 2.5" HDD untouched) and Samsung data migration software allows you to simply clone the old drive with 1 click.

@cDNA: You are right, they are better for a different purposes as you mention great is business laptops etc.

    • do you still get Warranty after upgrading the RAM and SSD?

      • Yes. Just keep the old hardware and replace it to its factory configuration when you need to claim warranty.

  • Scored one of these for $1120 in the last eBay sale. So far i's a very solid laptop, quiet and powerful. Will probably add an SSD just to give it that extra speed boost but the hybrid drive is decent for day to day use.

Scored one of these for $1120

Knowing that it's been cheaper recently is an instant dealbreaker IMO.

      • Also picked one up for $1100 last month. Got an ssd for it and it's been doing the trick nicely 😁

    • Nice! Where was that from?

      • +1

Dell's eBay store. Had the same discount applied as the current deal plus an extra 20% off (plus some extra with Cash Rewards)

    • I also got this for $1120 on that deal you are mentioning
for some reason, they had it marked down to the above price (from Dell)
AND they had the TECHIE20 ebay deal combined with it bringing it to this price

I think it is also relatively good bang for buck. It somewhat hard to get more than 20-25% off dell these days without this sort of thing happening or it being cleared out for new prduct

I try deal with Dell sales rep to give to me at 1120, sell rep wasn't interested. Asking me to go ebay.

Usualy, DELL laptops are costly for no reason.
Similar specs ASUS X555LJ-XO320T with 6th Gen. Core i5-6200U 8GB/1TB/ and Nvidia 2gb Graphics card for $729
    or much superior: ACER Aspire E5-772G-74WY with Core i7 / 16GB DDR5/2TB SATA + 128GB SSD/ Nvidia GT 940M 4GB Dedicated/ 17.3"screen for $1299.

    • +1

The ASUS X555LJ-XO320T has a 920m in it doesn't it? This Dell has a better model i5 as well with a low res screen. That Acer having more ram / more storage + ssd is still using a dual core i7 and a 940m. The 940m doesn't compare to a 960m. For gaming the Dell is easily a better choice.

Not to mention you haven't listed where these prices are from as there are different configurations for those models as well.

      • You're right. If you look at the benchmarks between the 940m and 960m, the difference is massive.

  • Is this laptop much superior than the Dell Inspiron 15-5000 15.6" with 6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-6500U Processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD; currently with 15% off at JB for 1103?
I'm about to buy that one, but would not mind the price difference if this laptop is superior. Uses are web, light gaming, software development, and general office work related tasks.
