Recommended Accomodation in Singapore for around $50 AUD per night

Hello all.

I'm planning to travel to Singapore soon and i'm looking for budget options for accomodation - in one of the worlds most expensive cities.

I'm aware of airbnb and hostels but wondering if you have any specific recommended hosts, hotels, hostels (I know theres a few new fancy ones) or accommodation providers in the around $50 (+/- 30 aud) per night.

I'm trying to avoid the geylang area as i'm aware thats a red light area. I've stayed in the lavender area, which was nice though.

Look forward to hearing your personal insights!

Chinatown is a pretty good low cost area to stay. Lots of hostels / pod hostels, lots of cheap places to eat and pretty central.

I stayed at the Wink Hostel and had no complaints - http://winkhostel.com/

Fragrance hotel chain is worth a look. I had a friend stay in one which was in the red light district (they weren't aware when they booked) however they say the hotel was clean, the staff welcoming and accommodating and they felt safe.

  • I found Singapore really check as a tourist but then I mostly just spent my time eating way too much at hawker centres. I stayed at Shophouse the last time I went. Great location - About 5-10 minutes walk to Bugis mall/MRT/hawker centre. I'm heading back soon so will be hostel hunting as well and will probably start with a Google search of '2015 top Singapore hostels'.

  • I thought somewhere near Geylang would be quite cheap but not sure if it's THAT cheap.

$50? Nah, not for a hotel but maybe a hostel. Think Sydney hotel prices.

  • I stayed at Quarters Hostel in October last year.
People were friendly, place was pleasant, location was good (though I arrived late night and it's a busy area outside on Circular Road), but in the morning and during the day, the bars were closed :)
Cost me about $50, was supposed to get a 4 bed dorm, but ended up in a 2 bed dorm.
I'd stay there again if travelling by myself.

  • I think to get anything reasonable and clean, you might need to raise the budget to $100 a night.

Just check the hotel comparison sites for any hotels that are offering discounts.

You can usually see the photos and reviews are generally quite honest.

*shrug It depends on what you like in a room…

  • Singapore is one of those rare cities where accommodation is more expensive on weekdays (Sun-Thu) due to the sheer volume of business travellers, you'll generally get better rates when staying over weekend (Fri-Sat) dates.

Given your budget constraint you're better off looking at couch surfing or hostel websites. Two sites I've previously used:

    http://www.hostels.com

    http://www.hostelworld.com/

What most people don't realise is that many hostels offer private rooms as well as dorm beds. Most private rooms however don't have ensuite bathrooms so you'll still have to use the shared facilities, this is probably the best you'll be able to get for a AUD $50-80 per night budget in Singapore.

  • Gaylang 8 is cheap

Bed sheets might be spermanted it's a hooker district.

My rule is any hotel with a number or military rank in its name is generally a dump, but can do the job.

  • If you can get your hands on / borrow one those really lightweight silk sleeping sheets (that I got really cheaply from a Katmandu outlet), that helps with any bed sheet probs.

  • There are a lot of websites that you can use to book hostels, but I started using "HostelZ" (not sure how you pronounce it) because it collects prices and other information from pretty much all the other hostel websites and puts it all in one place. See http://www.hostelz.com/hostels/Singapore/Singapore-City.

  • If travelling alone, go to a hostel. If not, stay in Geylang at one of the better reviewed hotels. Yes, its redlight but its Singapore redlight which means it feels safe and you don't get bothered. Lots of places to eat and you're out all day anyway. Seems like a better deal to get an ok hotel room with private bathroom than pay similar money for a dorm bed.

  • Thanks for all your comments!

    Much appreciated.
