4G Network Speeds

So I'm keen to know for those on Vodafone, what 4G speeds they are getting. Their coverage site states "speeds ranging between 2Mbps to 40Mbps when using a compatible device on this network, with an average download speed of 15Mbps". I am unable to find a similar one for Telstra or Optus. My current Telstra speeds are random between a few mb/s to 17 at the moment.

  • So your question is?

  • Highly variable.

I put a Telstra sim in my iPad 3 (not using Australian 4G bands). Running speedtest.net at my house (little congestion) gave me a 20mbit+ result (awesome!) 20 minutes later I tried while in the middle of the city (higher congestion) and it gave me 4mbit.

  • iPad Air 2
    Optus
    45 Mb/s Down
    16 Mb/s Up
    Eastern suburbs Sydney

  • There's a lot of variables that determine network speed at a particular time, but mainly the congestion on the particular tower. That's why the variance in what Vodafone are promising is so high.

    • True. But Vodafone's maximum is 40mbps, whereas it looks like Optus gets higher than 40, so its maximum must be higher. Same with Telstra. But I wasn't able to find those figures online.

      • Vodafone's maximum isn't 40Mbps, I used to be with Vodafone and remember pulling over 115Mbps in certain locations at certain times.

The 2 to 40 they quote on their site is probably outdated, or just a 'rough guide' to what you can expect.

If you have a category 6 LTE handset and you are in a location serviced by a category 6 cell tower, you will likely get more than 40Mbps unless the network is congested.

        • was that after they got their 4g up and bragging about how they were faster than Telstra?
…because hardly anynoe on was on their 4g network

  • location location location

I'd say the city should have the fastest speed most of the time, except for congestion periods. They're catering to a lot more uses, who 98% of the time are idle.

ie in Sydney CBD I consistently get 30-50mbps all work day with Telstra. If I had a 4gX capable device that would be 60-100mbps

On the other hand out in the South West, I typically get 3-5mbps, going upto 10mbps during what I assume few users are around.

Vodafone has boasted that they're faster than Telstra… I highly doubt that outside 5km outside the city

Just did a speed test for Sydney CBD 50.86mbps down, 27.4up

  • Put Vodaphone in the title please.

Anyway here's my current results on Optus: http://i.imgur.com/S1jefm7.png 16.39 down, 7.37 up.
Pretty impressed, the upload speed is much higher than my Optus cable internet.

  • TPG (voda 4g)
    Samsung Note 4
    Ping 38ms
    Download 20.78Mbps
    Upload 5.66Mbps

    Data used 21.7 MB

edit: in Northern Suburbs of Sydney

  • I got over 100Mbps down, and about 40Mbps up the other day in Macquarie Park on my Huawei Mate 8. Doesnt even have band 28!!

  • The speeds have certainly picked up a lot. However unless you are downloading multiple movies prior to hopping on a plane for a 13 hour flight, on a single device, why would anyone need these insane speeds? Interested to hear general feedback on this from users.

  • I was in Revesby NSW just a few minutes ago. I'm using the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge on the Optus' network. Here are the results:

    • Wow! Nice :) were you sitting under the tower? :P

      • I city bound on a train, ran the test while we stopped at Revesby. Might have been near the tower, not entirely sure though.

  • Downlink speeds is Downlink speeds/[excess information rates wooo. [PIR, EIR tests.]
Got on Voda 70+Mbps from up a hilltop at night, ime iirc for what its worth.
(Incidentally, how would often you check re: using a 500 MB/day/ My $2 days balance allowances, 130 MB-a pop optus in any event?:)

what any tech enthusiasts will care about after all this: level of symmetricity,1:1 would be neat, and application. (Decent UL by VHA fwiw…)

Application exist and work over a basic, committed low Mbps=3 for video(720p) or stream-music low 192Kb-level, Kbps. Thats it isn't it, run measured by Kbps' rather than Mbps objectively, I guess ?

  • That I should trigger a DATADAY by Vodafone, I can expect nothing less an 2,048 MB, sufficient to all-day stream radio as one practical. [200Kbps committed perhaps?]. Or a single film IPTV perhaps. Excess burst headroom +67 Mbps, only suggests a bunch of local streamers could share this even.

  • Clocked 224mbit on telstra with my 6S in suburbia - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/1399745896

    I'm sure there's faster but at $10/gig, I really dont care :)

edit: Havent tested Voda just yet but they're pretty much limited to 1800Mhz with no LTE carrier aggregation most you'll see is ~150meg give or take. T$/O$ have the upperhand since they have spectrum in both key bands (1800/700Mhz). Voda's refarming 850 but I dont think they have enough spectrum to make a difference, they really need to pony up and buy some of the 700Mhz goodness.

    • Thanks Ken! Impressive speeds :)

  • Got 20.44mbps on Huawei y550 just now. I'm at Camperdown

  • Samaung galaxy note 2 n7105 android 4.1.1.

    Down 44.7mbs
    Up 5.75mbs
    Ping 19ms

    Optus server.

    2 bars on 4g.

    • 38 mbs down
      17.7 mbs up.
