Cheap Windows Tablet for Mother

Wanting to get a tablet PC for my mother. She wants something she can take on holidays with her though still have a keyboard when required. I'm not too fusssed about specs, though I want it to be fast enough that it won't feel extremely laggish. 2GB of RAM preferred, though 1GB is enough.

I've had problems with Pendo in the past so won't be going with any of the products they offer. Beyond that I'm happy with suggestions of products from any brands.

So far I've seen things like this available for around the $200 mark:

  • If she only needs browser might consider chrome or Android?
    More choice?
If it needs to be windows what apps would she be using?

Got her an Android one in the past and it was a little confusing for her to learn, would prefer Windows at this stage. Plus Windows has the advantage of more USB compatibility.

  • Does it have to new?

I'm happy with refurbished tablets, though not 'used'/second hand.

      • refurbished tablets - may be used/second hand as this product may be fault by fixed by the manufacturer.

    I bought the Onda V919 3G Air for development purposes - http://www.onda-tablet.com/onda-v919-air-dual-boot-tablet-pc…
It has a retina screen and the same profile as an iPad which means you can use the same cases. It's dual boot so you can use it as a Windows and Android device… all for under $200.

I was considering it also. Have you received it yet and I will appreciate your review on it?

I think its a great device for the price. I needed something dual boot and after doing the research I decided on this model. There were some problems converting the language from Chinese to English but it was just a matter of downloading the right language pack.

The screen is great so it makes for a good comic book reader and watching movies. The only real drawback is the battery life which is expected for a devices at this price point. If you're traveling you'll make use of a power bank.

        • I'm also newish to tablets. Was looking at the Onda and was wondering if this would work for my purposes? I want a Windows to replace my very large and heavy HP pavillion laptop (core i5, 8GB RAM) when I'm travelling or in bed etc. Will mostly use the tablet for surfing, videos and but also want it to be capable of running powerpoints (mostly less than 10MB, but some also 80MB), xcel or retouching an image with paint.net etc. Thanks for your opinion!

        • @jamamamama: I think this is a case of you get what you pay for. The tablet will certainly do all that you've stated above just not as well as a Surface for example. The CPU and 2gb ram is what will hold you back from making this a true work machine.

        • @Ryanek: Thanks, suppose will be holding back a bit longer then. maybe choice/price for Windows tablets with halfway decent performance will be better in a while.

If you haven't noticed. All of those tablets you've linked do not include the keyboard. That's usually an extra $30-$50 US.

    • Wait, what? I assumed as it was pictured it was included…

      • Note: The keyboard in the picture is not included in the package

      • +1

Nope, just misleading promotional images from the manufacturer. The description says no keyboard included.

Eh, great… So I'm gonna be looking at more around the 250-300 mark for a tablet-keyboard combo?

        • +1

@dyl: Yep. They all do it. Even Microsoft.

        • @Clear: only really looked at Asus offers before now, they don't seem to do it separately.

    Are you updating the Nostromo?

A touch pad and colour screen really would spruce it up for the new millennium

    • I'm guessing not too many Alien fans here…

      • Everytime the bluray set gets posted it hits the front page…i guess noone pays attantion to what they watch anymore

        • Not enough lens flares, they're all waiting for the JJ Abrams reboot.
