Travel Insurance Coverage For Missed Connections

Hi Everyone,

Im travelling to the USA for a couple of weeks in May and have a flight with a 2 hour and 50 minute connection domestic to international at JFK.

I was wanting to know of there was any travel insurance that would cover if I missed my connecting flight.

Thanks.

  • Just came back from the US and our policy from TID - Travel Insurance Direct covers that - but missed connections not changed shedules

    • Ok thanks. I'll have a look into that. So if there's a fault or weather problem then I'd be covered for the flight change and accommodation? Flights from NY to Mel are only once a day.

  • Where are you flying to from JFK?

    • Miami to JFK. 2 hour 50 minute transit then a QF flight from JKF to LAX to connect with the flight to Melbourne

      • Ah I see.

2 hours and 50 minutes is a long time. You'd be very unlucky to be delayed for that long. The JFK to LAX flight and the LAX to MEL flight arrive into LAX and depart out of LAX from basically the same place.

I wouldn't be that worried about missing your connection. You are going in spring so you are unlikely to face weather delays like in winter.

Flights from NY to Mel are only once a day.

There are also flights to Sydney and Brisbane QANTAS/AA is pretty good with this. They'll handle getting you home 99% of the time even if it means putting you on the Sydney/Brisbane flight and then onto a connecting flight to Melbourne. Or even get you a United flight. If the JFK to LAX flight is very late the LAX to MEL flight will normally wait for you but your luggage will come the next day.

WORST CASE you'll get stuck in LAX for the night and the next day.

However that is not to say you shouldn't get travel insurance. Most will handle this sort of thing if the airlines won't.
