most vets are just sales people and their advice just comes from the companies selling you the product. dry food is cheaper and easier to manufacture (usually mostly wheat) and has more profit in it. canned food is meat although processed and not high quality but the dogs usually prefer eating it than dry. really should make your mind up on what results you see and not what someone tells you. feeding dogs real food is more nutritious but dogs can't eat foods that are too rich or it will make them sick.
if you look at the feeding guides on some foods they are so poor that you are supposed to feed your dog way more than it can actually eat in a day
I was feeding her as per the breeders instructions which was mostly the mince and chicken necks and leaving dry food for snacking but the dry food never gets eaten unless it is mixed with wet food and I found she would vomit during the night (on my sons bed) if she ate exclusively mince and chicken necks. So you are right, all you can do is go by how healthy and happy the dog is. She can't eat much more than 150g in a sitting so she gets a chicken tender treat in the morning, chicken neck at lunch and the dry/wet mix in the arvo. Seems to work. She isn't putting on weight and is not lethargic or sickly… what more can you do?
They're ALL $1 at Coles this week.
This will make a great substitute for anyone who missed out on the $4.20 Ingham frozen herb & mustard turkey roasts at Woolworths.
I don't know if it was a pet theory of my (very young) vet but apparently dry food is much more nutritious than wet food. I give my Bichon half MyDog wet and half MyDog dry and mix it up with chicken necks and chicken or turkey mince. I have no idea if it's a good diet but she seems healthy at 5yrs old.
