This is a late reply, but in future, as long as you haven't opened the bottle and you can produce a receipt you can definitely do this. Heck, I sometimes do it :p
wish i read ur comment earlier just opened my bottle of abunadh today..ah well nxt time tx
A'bunadh is delicious. It's more Islay than 90% of Islays.
If you like your whisky to taste like dirt and fire, it's what you need.
i've had the standard $70 Aberlour and i thought it was ok, lots of sherry. This is more smokey?
my fav bang for buck smokey scotch is the Talisker 10, really nice
Taliskers is a great drop! The Distillers editions (if you can get yourself one) I've found to be a really nice drop as well.
Laphroaig 10 and Taliskers 10 are my defaults for a peaty whiskey, but I have a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask that gets tapped up occasionally.
Just a shame that we get shafted so hard on prices…
Yeah, a'bunadh is good, but the newer batches seem to be a lot less matured than the older batches… still good though.
@jjcf Islay? I don't think so! I do agree that A'bunadh is pretty delish. The only fire you'll get from this is associated with the cask strength EtOH content. I get no peaty/smokey character - just a nice lick of sherry cask aromatics. I don't think that the standard Aberlour (@adam149) is a patch on this fine example.
IF, on the other hand, you do want to experience some Islay character, I'd recommend Highland Park 12yo. A bit too subtle? Then try Talisker 10yo. As others have suggested, it has buckets of character for a very reasonable price.
I may be a bit of a wimp - but Laphroaig 10 is a step too far. It is chemical warfare out there and I think that any whisky character is buried under the iodine and smoke attack. The more expensive members of the Laphroaig family are far better (IMHO).
I do agree with your correction on A'bunadh, its cask strength gives it fire, and its not smokey. Add a dash or two of water and it really opens up with amazing depth and flavour.
The other small but good bargain I liked this month was the Capi Tonic Water for $22 dozen.. I was lucky enough to spot a 1.75L bottle of Hendricks duty free for $100, all the tonic water will go well with. (Not fever tree but bargainers cannot always be choosers)
Ohhh - I'll have to follow through on that. We like Hendricks too - picked that up @ $60/L duty free, so you did better. Also got duty free Bombay Sapphire 'East' at a reasonable price.
@lostincanberra:
I went through Brisbane Airport, I dont think it was an uber special, just normal duty free price - http://www.jrdutyfree.com.au/product/5710741564/Hendricks+Gi…@Scoobth: Still better than paying retail!
I ended up getting 2 cases of the Capi Tonic - should keep us going for a bit. No, it isn't Fever Tree, but it is considerably more affordable.
Got hoegarden yesterday. Good price, good beer.
Bought the same a day ago. Can I return the bottle and buy again with around $14 discount in price?
