Looking to Buy a Projector below $800

Just sold my TV yesterday and now planning to buy a projector instead. Its getting hard for me to decide as because I don't have any idea on what details should I be looking at. So, i was thinking if you guys can help me to choose which one to go for

Basically does not have to be Full HD and I know I cant get Full HD under my budget.

Also, I will be using it mostly to watch movies and occasionally will take it for my business presentation.

At that price, the market leaders would either be the BenQ W1070 or the Epson TW5200. Both have pros and cons but I think the deciding factor for me is the bulb price. The Epson is only around $99 whereas the BenQ bulb can be three time as much. Epson is also an LCD projector as opposed to a DLP (where some people can suffer from the rainbow effect).

    • Thanks Ryanek,
      But that's over my budget.
      Looks good .

      • I've seen the Epson for under $800 at Costco

        • I did not find any in costco. However, I am now thinking to increase my budget to meet my needs. Any other suggestion. Also Epson TW5200 is Discontinued and BenQ is DLP.

  • Stay away from optima - had 2, both gave me issues.

    • Thanks very much for your suggestion. I will. I was looking to by EPSON brand. What do you think?

  • I have an epson projector which works really well. So happy with it that I have recently ordered (still waiting for delivery) another.
I use these projectors for work.

    • Which projector are you referring to?

  • It was >$800 at the time.
I can't recall the Model as it is at work, but it was around $1000 from office works.
Specifically chose that one because of the wireless connectivity option - Cost me another $100 for the USB dongle.
So in summary when I run a presentation I can connect between my laptop and the projector wirelessly!

Pretty cool gimic however if you use Office 2013+ you lose the preview slide function - you can only use the wireless with a direct screen mirror.

The new projector is a Epson EB-955WH WXGA Projector
Also >$800, but as I said, I need 'reliable' for work as I use one of these two almost every day.

One thing I find, it is a weight/size - noise - brightness tradeoff.
Easy to get small and light, but it won't be bright, unless you are willing to pay more.

Don't forget that these things are a LOT noisier (fan noise) than a TV, and they also pump out hot air when they are running.
If you have a small room it has the potential to get hot.

    • Great… Thanks for you reply. I am now thinking bump my budget more so that I can afford Full HD's for home cinema.
