Contents insurance - possibility of claim

Hello,

We have current home and contents insurance.

Our ceramic built-in cook-top has developed a crack and one of the plates is no longer functional.

We don't have any receipts for purchase or installation.

Is it claimable under home and contents insurance? Did you have any similar experience?

Thank you

  • Check your policy most probably only if you took out the optional accidental damage

    talk to your insurer

why would you think that a forum knows more than your specific insurance documentation?

  • how much is excess

  • If it's a built-in cooktop, then it would be considered as part of a "home", as opposed to "contents".

Whether or not it can be claimed, it really depends on how the crack developed.

You should refer to the Product Disclosure Statement or speak with your insurer directly.

    • I've checked my PDS:

      What they cover is:

"when you are a tenant under a lease which holds you legally responsible for accidental damage, we cover accidental breakage of:
––any glass that forms part of a:
      • fixed cooking or heating appliance; or
      • cook top or cooking surface;
but we will not pay to replace the entire appliance, cook top or cooking surface."

I am an owner of the property, so I am not sure if it would apply to me.

"Whether or not it can be claimed, it really depends on how the crack developed."
Could you please expand on this, e.g. accidentally dropping a frying pan on it VS it's being overheated and developing the crack by itself.
      Which one would be covered?

      • I used to work for GIO for a few years, and from what I remember, if a crack was a result of dropping something on it, and if you had "accidental damage", then it would be covered as part of the "home", as the cooktop was an inbuilt one.

However, if the crack developed just by itself, then it would be considered as "wear and tear" which would not be considered an insurable event.

That being said, I'm not sure if things have changed since I left.

        Which insurer are you with?

p.s. There should be a section at the start that states what is considered as part of the "home", and what is considered as "content". You might find out in which category your insurer would place the inbuilt cooktop.

        • Thanks for the suggestion - we have contacted the insurer and hopefully get a reply next week.
