What Tyres Should I Buy for Hyundai Getz

I bought a used 2011 Hyundai Getz in 2013. It now has 65,000kms, and the 2 front tyres are all but bald! I need replacements, but don't want to get ripped off. I was hoping to spend around $80-$90 each, but I want to get good tyres, which are safe, secure, good wet performance, good fuel mileage, and will last at least an average life of a good tyre.

This is my first car, and my first tyre purchase. I live in Brisbane. Price should include fitting and balancing. I would also be okay buying 4 if the price is right.

Tire size is: 175/65 R 14

which tyres should I buy, and from where should I buy them

  • Wouldn't skimp on tyres (or anything relating to maintenance of a car).

I tend to be satisfied with the price/performance of bridgstone tyres.

I usually got them from Bridgstone Select.

Ask for which tyre type you want and give a few Bridgestone Select store a call to compare prices. I am guessing by the car brand and requirement you probably want turanza (touring) or ecopia (low rolling resistance).

Also, you mentioned that the 2 front tyres are bald. How about the rear tyres? Have they reach the wear depth indicator yet? Have you rotated the tyre periodically? Tyres should ideally be worn and replaced at around the same time.

I drives reasonably powered rear wheel drive cars, all four tyres get roatated periodically and they wear evenly and by the time they need replacing, all four is worn.

    Find a store here.

They currently run 'Buy 3 Get 4th Free' promotion

    • My dealings with Bridgestone Select have gotten progressively worse, to the point of them scamming my wife out of fair amounts of money for imaginary services.

I actively suggest that you don't shop at Bridgestone.

Personally, I now get all my tyres from an independent guy in a rough neighbourhood, but I understand that his persona and premises is pretty rough, so he's not everyone's cup of tea. I trust him to do the correct tyres at bargain prices, but his opinions on immigration, the economy, or 'those crack heads down the street', are just for comedic value.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to service my car there. But the 3 for 4 tyre deal they got is pretty good. Got a set of 4 for under a grand (Potenza S001).

A friend of mine vouch for Bob Jane. I got my tyre there last time, ended up costing 2.5grand.. (Same Potenza tyre)

As a side note, while I can vouch to purchase the tyre there. I don't even trust them to have my wheel align anymore. I did a wheel alignment there ($65) whilst having my tyres replaced, but after 2 months, the car started veering to the left, ended up going to the dealer to have it done (for $320). My guess is that they might not tighten the bolt properly, coz during that time I haven't driven the car a lot or hit anything.

        A bit traumatized now…

Anyway, my impression of them; good place to buy the tyres. Question mark on the type of service they do.

        To the OP.

There are a brand of tyres that actually guarantee how long they last and I think not too expensive.

  • Blue streak tyres aren't too bad. I flog my car on a regular basis, and they've held up well in the wet. I can take 90° corners at 60km/h without too much squealing, a lot less than Yokohamas. They're about 22000km old and they've still got 65% tread left on all four. The bloke that fitted them for me said they were a parallel import from the Bridgestone factory.

Hop over to Tyroola. Nobody beats their prices full stop.

  • K Mart Tyre :)

  • I find the guys at Kmart Tyre and Auto (old Shell service stations, now called Coles Express) the best. Used to go to Bob Jane for years, then I got a car with strange tyres - Bob Jane just couldn't compare, or even provide the right tyres. My daughter has a 2010 Getz and paid $70 or so for a tyre a few months ago from Kmart.

For me personally, I like yokahama tyres as they are good in the wet and I feel safe driving them in wet weather.

  • It's a Getz, it's dead common, and not a performance vehicle.

Look at the tyres that are currently on it, ring around a few places for quotes on the same/similar tyres.

A trained monkey could do the actual tyre change, so don't be concerned with finding somewhere shiny and new looking.

    • Whatever you do do not go to KMart tyre and auto especially at Toombul. They are rude and incompetent.
Check out Costco. If you are a member or you know someone that is they have good prices. And if you are not a member or not near Costco you can get Bob Jane to match the Costco price, but you will not get the costco added value of free rotation and puncture repair for the life of the tyres.

Sounds like you're not really into tyre maintenance and rotation which a lot of people ignore. Front wheels on front wheel drive cars wear a lot quicker than the rear tyres. If your looking at replacing all four tyres pick a retailer that offers free tyre rotation every 10,000km, you'll get longer and safer use out of your tyres. Dads and grand dads are good for helping pick a suitable retailer and guide you through some of the traps.

GT Radials are cheap but also Choice recommended. Get them from Tyreright.
