Electric Shavers

I have been looking for an electric shaver for a while now, but cant even narrow my decision down at all.

Initially I was thinking about getting a cheap one on eBay like 50-100, they don’t look too bad, but then I start to think that maybe I should spend good money and get a good Braun shaver for like 250-300 since I will be using it for many years to come, maybe even one of the top of the line ones for like 380 (with self cleaning and the whole she-bang), but even then I don’t know where to start, or what the difference are (between the middle range Braun and top of the line Braun), and if they are even worth the money

Basically I am after a rechargeable one, and that is about the only criteria that I have… because I don’t know much about them.

The other thing that needs to be considered is refils of the cutters. If they are available etc.

I am after some advice on shavers, what people have, how good they are, and if it’s worth spending the money on a really good Braun, or the cheaper ones are still good refills, comfort, etc.

I plan to buy one online, eg eBay, so if you want to direct me to eBay links that would be helpful too.

Cheers

  • have you used a shaver before? did you like the feel? Does your skin recover from a shaver better than a razor?

If no, i'd be inclined to spend less, rather than more.

The expensive ones seem to have self cleaning instructions/better batteries. but do you need either? unless you have a 5-oclock shadow by 10am!!!

I've seen some in myer/shaver shop that look good for $50-70. I'd be inclined to go for a cheapie for your first shaver, just in case its crap and it just gathers dust.

Actually shaver shop had a special in their front door today, think it was a braun. 3 rotary blades….

EDIT: i was keen on buying a shaver (same position), then borrowed my brothers for a small use… didnt like the feel and never looked back… i spose its personal preference.

PS - i'll assume your male btw?

  • Hey :)
The high-end electrics generally have a trial period, i spent about $330 on a Braun series 7, decided it wasn't worth its weight and sent it back for a refund after 60 days.

On the up side, i even made $100 off it :) It was actually a $430 shaver with a $100 cashback, so when i returned it i got a $430 cheque + the $100 cashback.

If your willing to wait a few months before you get your money back, there isn't much harm in trying one of the high-end ones.

For that reason… I'd probably go with a store, and not so much eBay.

Honestly i think you need to try one for yourself to see what works for you… I read countless good reviews only to be horribly disappointed.

  • i am feeling so lazy to shave that i'm tempted to get an epilator so that it doesn't grow out so often… but the pain… :S

why not try out a cheapie shaver? I've not made the jump purely I think wet shaving seems to do the job better and cleaner?

  • Another thing on your criteria list should be that it can run on mains if the battery is flat/charging. Nothing worse than doing one side then it cuts out with a dead battery and won't start again until it is recharged!

I was actually thinking about shavers the other day… They used to be really expensive, I still remember buying my first one, Philishave tracer, I still have it somewhere. But then I got to thinking that the prices haven't really come down as much as they should have, compared to other electronic type devices. This led me into thinking that they are just a big scam and always have been.

Anyway I'd go with Davo's suggestion of getting a cheapie on eBay just to see if it is right for your skin. Then you can make a better decision before throwing down a big wad of cash.

  • Well you need to decide whether to go Braun (foil) or Phillips (rotary)…
Try both on the 60m days trial deal they both have and decide then.. supposedly some people's faces are suited better to one over the other.
Don't expect to save time though, Electric takes longer than blade. And it's not as good as a blade.. no matter what the ads say. I doubt it's any cheaper either.. Foils and cutters set you back $80 odd every 12-18 months. Cleaning solution is another $30 for 6 months or so.. I just refill mine with Pure Alcohol (but not many people have access to it like I do).
They just don't cut open your face as easily (they still can) and can cause less or no razor burn..

I have a 5+ year old Braun top of the line, which replaced a 10 year old (corded) Braun cheapie.. it self cleans etc. But I reckon the battery is dying and officially it's a non-user serviceable part, although I'm going to have a crack soon.
I think the new one shaves better than the old one, is it worth the $200 premium over a cheapie? who knows!!

  • sweet, thats awesome info!

initially my reason for choosing an electric shaver was to possibly save money,

but some of you are now saying that the cutter refills are quite expensive…

i am now leaning torwards getting a cheapie, and i think i definatly like the idea of a foil cutter as opposed to a rotary.

so i guess if anyone knows of a cheapie foil cutter, i am open to ideas.

    cheers.

    • The waterproof ones by Panasonic were supposed to be good when I was last looking around.
Not all that easy to find in stores but should be easy online.

None of them have cheap foils.. I think partially because they're (or at least used to be) coated in Platinum.. but also because you're a locked-in customer.

  • The cost of replacement foils/cutters reminds me in a way of printers. You can buy a cheap laser printer for $40-50… and the replacement toners are $80… lol

  • I am quite happy with this cheapie one from DX:
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8893
and it comes with 2 foil refills!

    • oh man….

i took everyone's advice but leiiv i didnt see yours in time.

haha i just came in to post that i had just bought one, literally less than 5 mins ago….

      i bought that one,

but wish i had seen your one before hand, it looks sweet.

      see how we go anyway.

      cheers guys

      • I am sure the Gillette brand is much better than the unheard chinese brand. I myself is looking for a good one and waiting for a good bargain to show up (premium brand with significant discount) :)

  • I bought this for $110.00
    http://www.shavershop.com.au/products/electric-shavers-2/moi…

when they had some sales on @ Myer, was using a razor before i bought it

has to be the best shaver i have used although only used a couple and didnt like them.

I like the open heads and how easy it is to clean as well there is a moisturiser dispenser if you need it which makes a really smooth shave although expensive, i dont buy the extras the shaver is good enough.

  • just got my shaver in the mail.

haven't tried it but from a first hands-on impression, i WOULD NOT recommend it, it feels really cheap and crappy, and i didnt realise this at time of purchase, when it said it was cordless, that batteries were not included. i thought it would be a rechargeable shaver, with an internal battery, and a wall plug, instead it just runs on two AA batteries…
