It comes down to the amount of fat/oil you are adding when cooking. When you deep fry you are immersing the food in molten fat or oil and a lot is absorbed into the food. Air frying and grilling can involve coating with a smaller amount of oil. If you don't add any oil when grilling or air frying, the fat or oil content of the food you are cooking is the main consideration.
The other health consideration is the charring/browning/caramelisation/colouration that comes with these cooking techniques. The chemical changes that result from frying and grilling create flavour, but they are also strongly associated with bowel cancer (aka colorectal cancer). For men who don't smoke, bowel cancer has the highest mortality rate of any cancer. For women who don't smoke, breast cancer has a higher risk of mortality, but bowel cancer is the second most deadly. Smokers don' have a reduced risk of bowel cancer - they just have to add the much higher risk of lung cancer on top.
So if the food item is the same (no extra ingredients)..there is no difference between air frying and grilling?
Basically i want crispy sweet potato chips
prefer to use fresh potatoes rather than supermarket pre-cut ones.
If you want crisp, hand-made crispy sweet potato chips, go for the AirFryer.
If you want anything crispy, go for the AirFryer. As I said, it's basically Grill+Oven and you work with higher temps, so you'll get the effect you want.
Actually, grilling will work as well, but maybe not as well due to the fact the chips aren't in a basket and the heat is a bit more uneven around the potato when it cooks.
^This. Also with an air fryer you just need to toss the chips in the basket a few times for even cooking and maybe give them a prod to separate a few stuck ones. With a grill you'll probably need to take the tray out and flip each one over individually which is my pet peeve.
Pardon my ignorance but I can't understand the number of people telling me I should get an AF. I already own a wall oven for roast & grill, a convection/ turbo oven, an electric fry pan. Had a look at AF and amazed at how small the "basket" is, and so hard to clean. The total footprint is huge compared to the outcome. For my family I'll need a XL which will take up 1/3 of my remaining bench space.
Have the Phillips AirFryer and love it.
Not that I use it for 'deep-frying' but it's very convenient and quick to use.
I would compare AirFrying not to Deep-Frying to be honest, despite how it's marketed, but to more using the oven.
AirFrying is kind of like using a really hot and fast oven and grill and the same time.
How healthy airfrying compared to grilling will be just depends on how much extra 'unhealthiness' you put on your food, otherwise, it will be the same. Obviously deepfrying is unhealthier because of the oil you must deep fry with…
