Crumpler: The Dry Red No. 5 Laptop Backpack $147 (40% off) at David Jones (RRP $245)

550

Hi All

Have been waiting for this bag to come on sale and finally saw it for a good price at David Jones.

Most stores don't have the black one in stock but they had plenty of the grey/red ones.

I got my black one from online and will post an image soon.

If you search under the David Jones website they also had other Crumpler bags/cases on special which was in stock in store as well.

When you want to purchase it online make sure you select all the correct drop down boxes (i.e. colour size etc) before you check out or it wont let you. took me a few attempts to clear it through.

Update: Link of proof I purchased it online at this price here : http://postimg.org/image/uxsfnmrgr/

    Thanks bought the grey one.

  • +1

    No probs!

  • Good quality bag. Great for travel. Price is what it is.

  • -7

As per the post above this one…..a rice cooker for $100.

This is a backpack for $100. The fact that it has a poncy name and has been reduced from its "rrp" of over $200, really should be setting off alarm bells.

    • +6

you cant compare just on price alone. i used to think like that too, until i moved my fat arse and went to the crumpler store to see what the big fuss was about. needless to say, im sold. good quality, well made, and attention to detail.

yes its expensive. yes the rrp is outrageous, but you do get what you pay for at the end of the day, and if you are lucky enough to be able to get one discounted, then why not. to be honest, i havent seen anything come close in terms of quality/price.

      • +2

The RRP more than likely caused you to see value that you otherwise would not have seen and it also created a sense of facing a potential loss if you didn't buy it.

Would you have bought the same item at $147 without seeing an arbitrary RRP?

The correct answer is you cannot say for sure however probabilities suggest you would not have.

        • Wow, that was really condescending. It's a wonder that t25 has made it this far in life without you explaining the foolishness of his opinions.

I got a Crumpler as a gift 3 years ago. Use it everyday and it still looks like new. No fraying or loose stitching, it's a quality bag.

        • +1

You are probably right. I cannot say for sure either, but what I can tell you is; like most people I recognise quality when I see it, feel it, and use it. That is where I get sold. Just like I have just about had it with cheap travel bags, and am now looking for a quality Rimowa. At first glance the price is outrageous. Hunt leather sells them at a ridiculous price too. But once you have seen one in action, used one (borrowed a mate's one), now I'm looking for one too.

    • +4

On top of what t25 mentioned, it also comes with a lifetime warranty.
Mine is still going strong after 5 years, it has been everywhere and still looks great.

      • Mine too, I got 2 crumplers for me and the Mrs, which are 9,7 years old, still looks as new. This is a great price.

    • +2

Strapping a rice cooker on your back might be setting off more alarms.

I have four crumpler bags (inc the dry red) - all incredibly high quality, durable and worth every cent.

  • +2

Great bag! Been using mine daily for work for the past 4.5 years and still going strong.

  • The David Jones page doesn't have much of a description. What features made you on the look out for this particular bag OP?

  • +2

    Hi Daneish,

More details on their website here

    http://www.crumpler.com/au/dry-red-no-5

Reason why I wanted this bad is because ice read up many reviews of crumpler being very strong and sturdy.

I also need a backpack I could fit my laptop and lunch box in but could also use when's. Go overseas traveling .

This bag also has a life time warranty

    • +1

Checked out the link, it looks good! Thanks Shyguy!

  • +1

Not to mention it also looks good

  • +12

It's a good bag - with one major defect.

You load the laptop in from the side, while this sounds good, if you ever forget to zip it up - the laptop has a chance to fall out.

Had 4 experiences of different laptops (mbp, dell, lenovo etc) falling out - and damaging the corners of each laptops.

I guess you can call it user error etc - but after using many laptop bags for many years, this is the only bag where the laptop has fallen out multiple times (even when i forget to zip the laptop compartment).

I much prefer laptop bags where you load the laptop from the top (or even have the laptop compartment inside the bag).

Just a FYI more than anything else.

    • -3

It's a backpack…you zip it up! If it comes undone, sure…but how can you forget to zip it up (repeatedly)?

I don't think the defect is with the bag…:P

      • O/I Error i think!

      • +2

Yeah you would think so, but i think people forget to zip their bags more than they realise. In most cases since there is no adverse impact, you don't remember it.

Usually it would be because I'm half way packing and then have to follow up with kids getting them ready in the morning. Or when you're about to leave to catch a train, and boss/colleague comes over and starts talking and then you're in a rush to catch the train.

      • +1

Its not a "defect", its a fundamental ergonomic design fault. He's right, the bag should be designed so that any chance of inadvertent accidental damage is minimized. Changing the way that you put the laptop in the bag from top to side increases the chance, not lowering it

    • 1/2 the time i don't have my laptop with me and put my tablet in the back, so convenient that i just unzip the side pocket and pull it out, without the inconvenience of taking the bag off to get to it, ie if it were top loaded -_-

    • This is a valid point. I've forgotten to zip my laptop bag up once or twice, usually happens when someone comes over and starts talking as I'm packing up. I don't think there's anything much to be gained from the side access either, so the very small risk of it happening is worth mentioning for sure.

I don't think it's a very attractive bag either. How is the padding on the shoulder straps?

      • Padding is more than sufficient, i run with mine.

      • Padding is pretty good, its a bit thinner than crumplers older bags - but still decent enough.

Has nice padding at the back (as do all crumpler backpacks) - so overall pretty comfortable, partly why I have persisted with mine for a long time even with the issue I'm having.

Also you can fit quite a lot in it, the side section can easily carry two laptops (I've carried a mbp 15" + dell 14") - important for some people who need to carry two laptops around. The center area meant for the ipad can carry a macbook air … if you ever needed to.

Overall good bag - but just be aware if you use a lot and get absent minded :P

        • -2

Still can't believe people are "forgetting" to zip the side zip, not once in my lifetime have i ever forgot to zip a bag. I guess some people are pretty careless with their possesions…

        • @Damonator84:
Haters going to hate. It was a valid point to mention.

        • +1

          @CanadaAye:

not about haters, it is about experience.

i thought it'd be cool feature, but turns out you forget to zip it up now and then…

think how many times you forget to zip the top of your backpack.. might only be 1 in 30 days.. but for a top loading backpack nothing bad happens, for a side loading one, your laptop falls out (usually when you swing it on/off your shoulder).

    • -3

      'Major defect'?

Don't blame the bag design for your incompetence when it comes to zipping up a bag. You think you would remember after the first laptop you damaged.

Seatbelts are pretty defective too if you forget to clip in.

Don't get me start on those car doors either! We should be entering from the roof so our doors don't need to swing open and risk damage if we forget to close them.

    • +1

      i agree 100% with this.

i have the North Face Kaban backpack which has side access.

I thought it was cool too until i forgot to zip it a few times and my laptop fell out.

I now almost never use the side zip, the main exception being airport security scans.

Thought it was a cool feature, but it's a half anti-feature.

  • Definitely a user error, never heard of anyone with this bag having their laptop fall out

  • +1

I purchased this bag when they had 30% off on Crumpler online, delivered mine was $200.
I use this bag everyday to and from work, Dell in the Laptop section with the side zip, Surface in the tablet pocket.
    The bag is awesome.
The bag comes with lifetime warranty.
The bag has zip expansion wich comes in useful for an overnighter if you need it.
The only thing i think they could have done better to improve it is to have more small pockets on the inner of the front face, don't get me wrong, there are plenty of pockets, i am just a little more demanding.

Overall if you need a daily bag you would be stupid not to buy one at this price.

I also have a MiniDV Video Camera, which come with a bonus Crupler bag back in like 2001, still to this day it is like new, crumpler bags are very top quality and you will NOT find a substitute anywhere.

my previous bag was a "incase" branded and the stitching was starting to let go at the top, only time until it would have split and i was in for a new bag.

  • +1

Someone's changed it to out of stock but there is still some available nation wide when I checked the website a moment ago.

  • +2

There's 19 black ones left and 34 slate grey ones left in the country.

    • Is it 40% off all crumpler??? Love their bags!! Might have to check out in store as sold out of the 5 bags they list online…

      • +1

I have no idea, sorry. Was there a particular one you were after? I can see if we sell it and if it's on sale

        • I was gonna see if any of the camera bags are on sale…as they usually aren't :(

        • +1

@KupoHo: Do you have a name for it? I don't work in luggage so I have no idea (do we even sell camera bags still?)

        • @kerfuffle:
Haha! I would have no idea as I don't normally
          Shop at David Jones.

Would be interested in the 4 million dollar or pleasure dome bag. But no worries if you can't find out, will try and pop in store :)

        • +1

@KupoHo: We don't sell either; sorry.

        • @kerfuffle:
Doh! Thanks so much for checking for me :)

        • @KupoHo:

The 4 million dollar home red or navy ones are on sales in Myers for $65.

          http://www.myer.com.au/shop/mystore/-196114240--1

        • @eggyolk:

Thanks Eggyolk!!! Looks like that is too big for my little camera. Will have to wait until the pleasure dome is on sale :(

But had a look at what's on sale and I have never seen the Crumpler Dry Red no 3 ($119.25) and no 4 ($150.75) going for that cheap…that's more than 50% off. So if anyone needs new luggage for travel I would definitely jump on it!

    • any black ones left in Brisbane ? It said out of stock in all Brisbane area

      • According to the stock search system, Robina and Garden City QLD are both showing 1 for black, so not looking too good …

    • @kerfuffle: Any chance there's inventory showing of these at any Perth-based stores? (Perth Hay Street Mall, Garden City, Claremont, or Karrinyup)

      Thanks in advance.

      • +1

How hard is it to remove the logos? I don't want people seeing I have an expensive bag and assuming its a good target for theft. I usually do the same with my camera gear bags on travel. Best to just put some duct tape on the logos?

Also how does the lifetime warranty work free bag if it breaks before I die? My best backpack was a Nike one from primary school it lasted 20 yrs through school and university abuse, daily work use and multiple overseas trips =P Nothing else has been the same quality. I guess they built backpacks a lot stronger in the old days.

    • +1

I think thieves would be more inclined to steal the lv and Gucci bags casually slung over girl's hands and shoulders…

I don't think Crumpler is that well known regardless of our love for them (which I thing is a good thing). Except maybe in the camera community, as I seem to see most photographers have at least one :)

We have a few Crumpler bags from when they launched in Australia which have withstood many overseas trips and we have never had to take them in for warranty purposes…hopefully yours will be the same!

    • Get yourself a super sharp knife, a pick of some sort and give yourself plenty of time. Its not impossible to do, just time consuming because they have taken the time to put it together very nicely.

      • Cool so they are sewn on and not glued on thats good to know! Should be easy to remove and leave the bag looking good.

        • ive never tried myself, but my one is sewn around the edges. no guarantees that they haven't glued them for added strength.

  • +1

Was looking for a backpack for travelling but did not buy as this bag seems like an easy theft target, you cannot clip the zip pulls together because the zip pulls are solid Crumpler logo ones., no loops. The bag has two big clips on the sides securing the front but it is easy for someone to reach the front section of the bag where you might put a smartphone as the zip opens from the top. No side pockets to put a drink bottle. Not really a suitable bag for travel even though the dry red series is marketed as such. Otherwise a nice looking bag.

    • I bought this for hubby purely for travel for that side zip as it makes it so easy to take the laptop through airport screening.

Could you not move the Zips to behind the clips? Or just to the bottom of the bag?

      • Was referring to the front compartment, the zip only pulls up to close and down to open. Yes would be wise to hide the zip pull under the front flap, and pull the straps tight to avoid being an easy target.

  • None left ? I'd like a green one (preferablly) for my parter for her birthday if anyone has a link to a similarly discounted bag ?

  • I don't think DJs stock the green one .

  • I don't have this bag but I bought a Crumpler briefcase for uni some time ago. The quality is excellent for the (discounted) price - sturdy construction, good storage and it still looks like new after a year of constant use.

  • Would this bag be acceptable for "carry on" luggage with most airlines?

    • I've seen a few ppl take it onboard (I travel overseas often) . Flights included Virgin, AirAsia, Malaysian airlines, Cathay, Korean air, Japan airlines . Quantas etc. so I would say it should be more than perfectly fine.

    • +1

I've used the Dry Red No. 5 as my carry-on luggage when I'm travelling overseas on both Garuda and Qantas and haven't had any issues so far.

  • +3

Anyone looking for a backpack alternative, Crumpler online store has 30% off plus coupon squirt2016 for another 15% gives you roughly 40% for their bags

Rampaging mob (L) from $225 down to $134
    - different type of Backpack and 25 litres storage as opposed to 20 litre of dry red 5.

    • Do they have sales like this often?

      • +3

Probably twice a year at least.

But it's normally between 20-30%. First time for me though to experience having a coupon added on top to make it 40% off.

Occasionally iconic, cotd, Rushfaster, Myer and David Jones will have it at 40% at times. Just have to wait for it.

    • I see that the height of this bag is 57 cm, is it too high if compared to the dry red no. 5?

      • No idea, I dont own either sadly cuz got 3 backpacks already.

You may need to check the store yourself or Crumpler store.

It is a big bag when I see it in the photos.

  • Been waiting for a sale for this bag for a while. No stock online, but chose in-store option and just got the confirmation email. Yay! Thanks!

  • My CnC was just cancelled. No stock although i've already got the confirmation email earlier.

  • Is it just me, or is the David Jones website broken?

Constantly stuck at trying to use the guest checkout (which is the only way to create an account anyway) - when pressing the button for Guest, their overlayed pinwheel/loading graphic displays, the browser is trying to load something, but it just sits there.

Have tried multiple browsers, multiple connections, run the browser clean - but still nothing.

    shrugs shoulders

    • It's a bit glitchy took me a few times to get it through. Make sure you try the try different dropdown selections if it doesn't work first time.

      • Makes Myer's website seem positively solid. Gave up using their website at the end.

  • No chest strap no deal.

    • +1

Rampaging mob (L) I mentioned in above post has a chest strap

      • Thanks will check it out.

  • -2

For that price it better have a spare laptop in there.

  • is victoria sold out? Seems to be

    • Two left in black and two left in grey at Doncaster, two left in grey at Bourke St Mall, two left in grey at Highpoint.

      • Mate can you help me out? I went to Elizabeth St Sydney CBD store they said out of stock. The officer told me there are a few left in Bondi Junction, however I check online it says out of stock?

        • Becuase you're looking at the Black one which Bondi Junction is out of stock on. There's four grey ones left at Bondi Junction

        • @kerfuffle:

          You are a legend. Thanks.
Is there any store nearby has stock for the black one? It doesn't allow online delivery

        • +2

@chonghe: Chatswood have 2, Castle Towers, Macquarie Centre and Hornsby one each. That's all.

      • Hi I've got confirmation for CnC from Bourke St VIC for a grey/red and half an hour ago,I received phone call from Bourke St directly saying that they did not have this on the floor.sigh~

I have asked whether they could try to get one from another store and do a sort of stock transfer and she said she would note it down and passed on to her manager. fingers crossed

        • They probably couldn't find it in the reserve or it's lost/stolen/miscounted last stocktake. Can happen sometimes.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a stock transfer; we're not allowed to do them normally. If you really want the item, you'd have to trek it to Doncaster.

        • If it's still available online I would try and price match at Myer.

  • will I be able to fit a 17 inch laptop in this bag?

    • No Sadly

      • Thanks. I will give it a miss.

        • Rampaging mob (L) I mentioned in above post can fit a 17" laptop.

  • Thanks, bought one.

  • Nothing Left In NSW Acceept Grey/Red At Bondi Junction.

  • What size laptop will it take?

  • +4

If you're struggling to get this from David Jones, I had no problems getting a price match on this in store from Myer today.

    • +1

      Hi thewinchester,
Are you in VIC or NSW?Did you just show them DJ webpage to get price match? Thanks
Will try my luck tomorrow in VIC.

      • +1

I'm in WA ja912son, and was able to show them the web page.

Never had a problem with showing a web page for a price match at Myer, and I make good use of their competing pricing policy all the time :)

    • +1

Not On Myer's Website, Not Sure If Stores Will Stock?

      Yanked - http://www.myer.com.au/shop/mystore/women/accessories/luggag…

      • I was able to grab two black ones at $147 each from Myer Sydney City yesterday (using the price match). They had the grey/red and green in stock as well.
