Desktop PC

Oh, hello there!

I just purchased this PC from ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140380… - was wondering if OzBargainers thought it was a good deal or not? I spent some time looking into various deals from various places, even created my own excel spreadsheet with columns for all the specs and prices etc, and although there were some other deals that were fairly close in value to this one, i think this was slightly ahead of the others. The cpu rank is 111 and gpu rank 171 @ www.cpubenchmark.net, so overall its reasonable. There are some shortfalls (ddr2 mboard) but i dont game at all, just wanted a modernish PC mainly for 1080p playback and video editing. Just wanted to see if you guys had any feedback?

Thanks!

  • I can't say I'm up to speed with desktop computer prices these days, but I think the easiest way to really know if it's 'a good deal or not' would be to print the eBay ad and take it into MSY/Umart etc. Ask them to put together a quote on something similar.

if those are the things u do, i think an intel would of been a bettter choice

  • How so? The performance of this pc is fairly ok, i mean ive gone by benchmarks not brandnames.. MSY / Umart too dear, they are just not even in the ballpark for consideration im afraid.

dude… you gotta watch out for things like PSUs… it could be one of those $0 PSUs that comes with the $50 casings that will one day fry every single component attached to it

how are you comparing benchmarks when you are not familiar with the stability of the chipset of the motherboard? 500gb drives isn't even funny nowadays when you can get easily 1TB for $90ish

I think you can assemble your own with the exact same specs… and probably end up with a better motherboard.

too many factors to consider… might as well start with a budget and work backwards on the MSY list or something.

for the same spec as this machine
      AMD 3 X4 620 - $108
dunno about the motherboard so im just getting the cheapest
      G-B M61PME-S2P - $56
      4GB DDRII Kingston ram - $110
      1G GT220 ECS/MSI - $69
      500GB Seagate HDD - $55
      Lite-On dual layer DVD burner - $30
      Thermaltake V3 case with 450w PSU - $76

      comes to $504 total
saving $84 if u can pop into an msy get the parts and build it yourself

So on one hand MSY is too dear and is not even in the ballpark for consideration, yet on the other hand they seem to be $84 less - some 14%.

        • that's with a half decent case with psu
if he went generic he can knock off another 10 dollars or so

  • i agree with slowmo, work out a budget (i.e. what you already have), and work backwards from the msy/umart price list. I wouldn't use the generic psu's like shaw, apower etc… its just too risky. if it blows up, they will send you a new psu… and who wants that!!!

stalk the whirlpool forums too: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=PSU_Recommendations

EDIT: if msy is too expensive, then you should buy a second hand machine…
