KIA Carnival Platinum - What Do You Think of This Offer?

Hi all,

So I'm in the market for a people mover and after researching and test driving a few, I'm pretty set on the newer model KIA Carnival. After negotiating with a few dealers, I've had the following offers:

KIA Carnival Platinum MY2016

  • Ex demo - 4000kms, registered 3 months earlier
  • Metallic paint
  • Diesel Turbo 2.2L
    Accessories:
  • Tinted windows
  • Car mats
  • Premium license plates
  • Extended Dealership warranty - 3 years on top of KIA 7 years (expecting this to be pretty meh)

$55,400 drive away

KIA Carnival Platinum MY 2016

  • New
  • White paint
  • Diesel Turbo 2.2L
  • No accessories

$58,500 drive away

Personal situation:

  • Family of 5, eldest is 5yrs old, youngest will be born in May.
  • Need extra space for double pram and driving extended family around.
  • Current car - 12YO Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Would need to purchase new car by end June - not sure if EOFY sales would be better

Leaning towards the ex-demo, anyone reckon I can get a better deal?

  • 10 years warranty! Thats worth while and you'll need it.

    • But the extended part is a dealership warranty which isn't worth much

      • It is really just to encourage you to continue servicing with them, so you are right its not worth much but might come in handy if something major goes wrong.

  • Hmm, reasonable prices considering the market is around $60k

  • what are the build dates (from VIN plate) of each option?

We have a 2007 model. 4 kids all under 8. Really good car from the point of view of space management. Our other car is a Land Rover Discovery and the Kia puts it to shame roominess. But….. damn good thing we had an extended warranty because the amount of sh!t that goes wrong with these cars is astonishing. It's now out of warranty and last week I spend over 1K on drive shafts, rotors machined and an engine mount. The part alone for the engine mount was $330!
My advice - buy new and sell before the warranty is up.

    • We had one of these, SWB V6 whatever. I think we sold it at 70,000km.

Pretty fault free for us maybe due to the young age. It was getting to the point that it needed maintenance but its 2 ton brick so you kind of have to expect it to wear out pads like nothing else.

    • You probably have the version with the land rover kv6 engine which was notoriously bad. Newer versions don't have the same issues

  • Heart set on a Carnival?
Tarago V6 new could be possible for less than what you are spending above and to start with it comes with arguably the best motor and transmission ever put in a car these days, the same one you will find in a Lexus.
Add to that legendary build quality, reliability and durability (see feedback from Carnival owners), low servicing and maintenance costs and you are making a smart move. As a bonus the 200kw motor in 2wd form delivers better economy than most 4 cyl people movers. Drive one before you decide … :-)

For your $55k a Landcruiser Prado may be another option?

Not given the OP's situation it wouldn't be:

      • Family of 5, eldest is 5yrs old, youngest will be born in May.
      • Need extra space for double pram and driving extended family around.

As much as I love to recommend a Prado, this OP needs a proper people mover.

I looked up the Tarago when I first read this post, and features for features it's not in the same league. Sure, the engine and gearbox are great, but the whole driving experience isn't up to the same grade as the Kia (as much as I don't like to say it lol). Toyota really need to step up and equip their cars better.

      • "driving extended family around."
        ie: wants 3rd row… :-)

Driving experience.. it may not be comparable at new?…dont know but never tried a carnival or a prado for that matter but i could bet that after say 10yrs of hard yakka the driving experience of a prado would definitely be superior.
        Anyway.. back to the Tarago..

  • I test drove the Kia carnival, very nice drive, the last vehicle I test drove was the ssangyong stavic ( I did not want to like, but it was surprisingly good for what it is) . For 30k drive away it is perfect. The Kia is not worth 25k more. I then went and installed DVD headrest in all the rear seats. Perfect for when the other half is driving and I can sit in the back with a cold one;-)

  • We've got the Kia Grand Carnival MY2011. It's the perfect kid's car - so many useful extras that the others didn't have. We looked into both the Tarago and the iMax and neither measured up to the Kia.

Grab the ex-Demo, it's the better deal.

Hey everyone, Thanks for your thoughts and feedback, much appreciated! I'm going to go with the ex-demo :)

We did weigh up between a people mover and a 7 seater SUV, but given we plan to keep this car as long as possible, the people mover made more sense as the kids grew up.

  • May i know which dealer
I m in sydney, looking to get a petrol one should be 3grand cheaper then.
