Cost effective optical mouse

Hi

I'm using an HP mouse and usually I need a pad to use it, without pad it doesn't work or works bad. I'm looking for a mouse that would be working on most desks without need for a pad. No other fancy features needed - no gaming, no wireless, no beautiful design, just a robust office mouse that can be used without a pad.

Any advise?

Thank you!

  • All the optical mice/mouses I've used work without a pad. Are you using it on a glass surface?

Perhaps get a laser mouse as opposed to an optical one? You don't need a gaming one. Logitech used to have cheap corded laser mice.

  • Well, maybe I'm using not an optical mouse? How to check?

BTW I have one desk with glass surface, what type of mouse should work on it without pad, if any?

    • Get one of those scroll ball mouses lol…

Anyway, correct me if I am wrong guys, but from my knowledge, optic has the red lights when you lift the mouse whereas laser does not.

Asides from the HP mouse, I'd say the above options should be pretty robust.

    • Thanks, will try the Microsoft 4500 one.

      • I purchased it and it really works cool without a pad, however still doesn't work on a glass table, which is fine and expected.

        Thank you for advice.

        • For glass tracking you'd need to buy a slightly more expensive logitech darkfield laser mouse

There are only 4 (yes, four) mice produced by Logitech that has darkfield tracking
Logitech MX master, M905, MX anywhere 2, and the M905T.

and they're all usually in the $80 dollar range.

        • If it doesn't have to be a mouse, or if you want better ergonomics, give trackballs a try. Amongst my pointing devices for PC (Logitech M570 trackball, Logitech MX Master mouse, Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic mouse, Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser 7000 mouse, Wacom Volito 2 tablet) I prefer the trackball over all the others (except for intensive graphical work). If you are lucky to find stock, it is $36 at DSE.

You do have to train your thumb though, it takes about a week to gain proficiency. Play some games to accelerate the training.

  • There's heaps of sub $20 OEM mice on ebay that would work. I actaully prefer the red led mouse as its more visible (obviously) than laser mice and laser mice doesnt matter on desktop non gaming use.
