NSW Car Rego - Is $1240 Expensive or Normal?

I have recently received my registration papers from NRMA and the RMS which comes to a total of $1240

NRMA CTP = $887
RMS REGO FEE = $353

Now, for some reason I feel like this is too much compared to previous years.
My car is in my dads name (I thought it'd be cheaper that way).
I am thinking of changing it back to my name now that I am over 25.

Anyways I wanted to know if this amount sounds normal to most you guys and how much you are paying for your rego.
Also would anyone have any recommendation if I was to shop around. Do you reckon I could get it cheaper.

Mine has never been that high. Do you drive a stupid car with a milo tin?

    • No, its just a regular 2007 honda civic

NRMA CTP…its always higher than the rest

Agree, though their insurance seems to include injury insurance for the driver.

    It's normal.

CTP has gone up. Mine was 650 last year and any new quote i got for this year is 886.

300+ for registration is normal too.

    • oh fair enough.. thanks

What have you been paying recently? That is around the same price as my car, this price has been constant for the the past year.

    • i paid less than $1000 last year

This is normal. You can shop around for CTP and save a few $.

Most of the CTP money goes to the insurance companies, and the lawyers. Less than half actually makes its way thru to the victims of crashes.

almost 40% cheaper here in VIC. $750 for rego

CTP prices have gone up a lot this year.

Post code, age of driver, and demerit status are the big deciding factors.

    • Cheers

Be careful when you transfer the car to your name, you will be hit with a stamp duty cost of 3% of the cars value ($21-40k for 2007 various civics).

    Check you CTP Greenslip prices

If you have demerit points then you will pay higher CTP Greenslip prices ~$200-250 higher

Which is a complete rort, it should be based on the car not the driver. A pensioner could sell you the car with 12months rego and the CTP doesn't go up to match the new driver, it is fixed for the term of rego.

Just renewing mine now : CTP = $369 from QBE (46yr old), NSW rego is $504 (heavy Outlander PHEV) so total $873
NRMA is fleecing your dad it would seem, considering he would be at least my age.

The age of the youngest driver is relevant in the calculation not just the the policy holder.

We came up from Victoria a few years ago and couldn't believe the differences. NSW is definitely much dearer. The CTP in Vic is run by the government and seems to cover much more than third party in NSW without the need to go to court. I think they save millions in legal costs. Maybe NSW should look at a similar scheme which doesn't provide for insurance company profits. Any profits made in Victoria are spent on road safety. So much for competition between insurance companies, NSW people are getting a lesser quality cover for a greater price.

    • Every so often a talking head from the Liberals say they are "looking into it" but its all the same shit.

Apparently 55% of CTP in NSW goes into Admin and Legals. LOL.

Expensive and normal for people our age. We're very incompetent and shouldn't be on the roads, so they charge us more.

In all seriousness though, I've never been in an accident, have had maximum rating with all insurers and I still get ripped off on CTP/insurance. The perks of being a 25 year old male.

Where is the cheapest rego in Aus actually? Tassie?

  • I just got my renewal and it is $677.20.CTP is $336.60 and Rego is 289.85, but thats for Queensland.

  • Depends on your driving record. I managed to get my CTP for $500ish but on the premise of clean driving record. Brother on the other hand not so much.
