Where to Buy Furniture from?

Hey all!

I have recently moved to Melbourne West and looking for ideas on where to buy home furniture from. I am looking for some other options besides ikea, Supar Amart & Fantastic Furniture. Had a look at Harvey Norman & freedom furniture the other day and was blown away by the prices.

at the moment i am looking for sofas (3+2), TV unit and a coffee table so any suggestions OZBargainers? From where do you guys normally buy furniture from? any preferred place?

Gumtree - youll find better quality stuff at a fraction of the cost

Get a steam cleaner too - the couches will come up good as new

Hire a trailer if you dont have access to one, thats the only thing require

    • +1 to gumtree. For a trailer you can always do the old "buy a length of long wood and need a courtesy trailer" from bunnings trick :P

      • Please elaborate - not aware o fthis one…. I always rope a mate woth a ute into this sort of thing, cheers

When you purchase items from Bunnings that are too large to fit in your vehicle they have a courtesy trailer that you can use for up to 2hrs for free. They are pretty loose with the times at my Bunnings, I think I've had it for up to 3 hrs before with no charge.

One time for example I bought 2 lengths of decking timber for about $12. I then used the trailer to deliver my couch and fridge and a few other large items when I moved house. You can then return the trailer and the item, (for example say the decking timber didn't match the timber on your deck.)

@subywagon: gold. Thanks buddy - i love a good scam involving coles or woolies….cheers

        • @subywagon:
Great tip! Is it the trailer or ute?

@mmd: Just the trailer unfortunately :P

        • @subywagon:
Still good enough. Been looking on gumtree to possibly hire a trailer.

        • @subywagon: I thought they stopped that scam! We used to buy either 2x lengths of non-structural pine or 1x big piece of MDF 3mm

        • @jellykingdom: Some Bunnings may be more strict than others, but really I couldn't see them refusing to lend a trailer if you've bought items too large for your vehicle. I'd make a scene :p

  • Never thought i would but we bought a lounge from gumtree. It was 2 years old and stored for a year, still had 3 years warranty. We just got our cat so we dìdnt want to spend 3.5k on something she would/could demolish.

We were pretty specific as we wanted something we could clean, so we got it for about 500 and straight away took the covers and chucked them in the washing machine. Its a king so has removable/replaceable covers etc.

If you can get one with 100% removable covers, when you wash it they give you the new bed sheet feel. If you cant remove the covers you can hand wash with soap and a soft brush but you have to wet vac the excess water and it will take longer to dry.

Also look on gumtree, you can hire trailers for like 30 per day. For a 3+2 a 7x5 is minimuim you need, plus straps. Some bunnings only have 6x4 which might be too small.

Dont buy something with just foam in the seat base, it wont last.

  • Definitely go gumtree or ebay for the table and unit

I'm a bit dubious about lounges off gumtree but if its leather then it will clean up ok

  • Selling coffee table. PM me.
