Cold Storage. Built on top of Amazon Glacier storage infrastructure, it is meant for backing up rarely accessed files that don’t need frequent updating. It is designed for archiving purpose and the cost is very low, although there is 3-5 hours delay in restoration. But for backed up photos, you can preview them without having to wait.

  • Never even heard of this cloud backup service, and I'm suppose to give up my personal data to them??

I'm using it to store non confidential files as a backup if I ever need them . For $1, it's less than a cup of coffee and can potentially be very helpful one day

If you put tour faith in a single back-up, you probably also believe that each martyr gets 32 virgins in paradise.
If a company looses your data or can't restore it, with the SLA you just don't pay your months subscription …… I also keep a back-up at home, not just the cloud.

So the SLAs, etc is there, but if your data is lost it's just "sorry we won't charge you, here's your $1 back".

AWS and Azure write data 3 times to different infrastructure …… 3rd is tie breaker incase one is corrupt and they need to decide which is corrupt.

For the money it's ok if it's not your only back-up.

my back-ups are one on the PC, one in the NAS, and one in the cloud incase the house burns down or I'm burgled ….. and if you have Office365 your data in the cloud is triple written anyway. You are now at the 99.999999999% durability claimed architecture (google Amazon Web Services)

      *72 virgins

Yes, but in all fairness only 32 of the 72 will be any good.

      • Only 32 of those 72 are usable. The other 32 are imaginary Raid-0 backup virgins, and the remaining 8 had been corrupted and don't actually live in paradise anymore.

If you put tour faith in a single back-up

The mistake you and anyone else is making is thinking this is a backup service.

      It isn't.

We know this because it's using AWS Glacier which allows a lot of storage but almost no retrieval (without exorbitant cost) relative to the amount of data stored.

If you wish to use it as backup service for something like a typical Windows system partition be prepared to pay a lot of money should you wish to retrieve the entire backup at once.
