Is Warranty for White Goods Transferable?

I'm looking to sell a fridge to a friend. It was bought it brand new and I've had it for a year. The warranty card says it has a 2 year manufacturer's warranty for the original purchaser. If I provide my friend the receipts, is the warranty still valid?

  • Always wondered this too.

Do the receipts have your name on them? If not, I can't see how they could not honour it…

    • It does have my name and address

  • Don't see why not.

The warranty applies to the item not the owner according to the Australian Consumer Laws. The 2 year manufacturers warranty for the original owner might not apply to Australia given we have additional laws.

However I would call the company and find out. Just see if you can find out in general terms what the deal is.

  • I have always been under the impression that consumer guarantees were not transferable under the ACL as the goods would be deemed second hand. Unless the goods were received as a gift

    266 Rights of gift recipients
If a consumer acquires goods from a supplier and gives them to
another person as a gift, the other person may, subject to any
defence which would be available to the supplier against the
    consumer:
    (a) exercise any rights or remedies under this Subdivision which
would be available to the other person if he or she had
acquired the goods from the supplier; and
    (b) any reference in this Subdivision to a consumer includes a
reference to the other person accordingly.

    I could be wrong.
