Pay by PayPal, AmEx or CC?! (for Non-AUD eBay Payment)

I was about to buy an item from ebay. Even though it is listed in Aus-ebay site, the price it quoted as GBP.
Which payment method incurs less conversion/surcharge fees?
Paypal or Credit card or AMEX?!

unless you have 28degrees card or similar, then go paypal…

but, depends on value of item… more info required

    • This item is not expensive, about 10 GBP. Yet I was wondering if there is any hint from OzB for similar transactions ;-)

FYI - Prior to owning a 28 Degrees CC, I was with HSBC and they charged me an overseas transaction fee for something I bought via PayPal, via eBay, where the seller was located overseas. Apparently they can tell where the transaction is processed even if you pay in AUD, so tread carefully. I actually phoned HSBC to question the charge and they credited the it back to my account.

I always go with my citibank debit card through Paypal for any currency other than AUD. Bank credit card currency conversion charges are around 3-3.5%. No credit card I have seen has reward points more than this percentage.

I think PayPal with Bankwest Zero Platinum, 28 Degrees, Citibank Plus debit, etc., charged in GBP would be best. No worries with foreign transaction fees and some buyer protection via PayPal.

  • ALWAYS PAYPAL FOR EBAY PAYMENTS!

Don't be a cheapskate. Paypal have the best buyer protection.

I think he is simply referring to the Paypal conversion rate, ie go with the credit card rate, or Paypal's.

100% what dazweeja said above. Outside those 3 cards go with Paypal's AUD conversion rate. However, I believe AMEX wont let you use Paypal's conversion rate.

  • When you want to pay with 28 degrees conversion rate (current xe.com rate), how do you specify the 28 degrees credit card instead of the paypal account?

do you have to avoid logging into paypal at the payment screen? I logged into paypal at the ebay payment screen and there is a option that takes you to use your own credit card. but i've never been able to input my credit card details because its the same one that paypal bills. so i assume i pay from my credit card instead of through paypal that bills the same credit card. but the invoices always say, thank you for using paypal. anyone know what went wrong, or if things went right?

I select my 28 degrees card in Paypal when I'm paying in foreign currency. You have to tell Paypal to charge in that currency though instead of them doing the conversion. My 28 degrees card is always set to pay in whichever currency the payment is for.
