          So where do I get a brand new iPhone 16GB for $179 ? ;-)

I guess even a refurbished one may still offer more options than the iPod :-)

        • @oz-dave: Maybe I need to dust off the two iphone 4 phones I have in my draw and put them up on ebay/gum tree. I keep going to use them as music players but then just use my current phone.

It's shonky to try selling sketches of them!

(or did you mean you have some in a drawer?)

        • @llama: Ooops. Come up to my room and I will show you my credenza.

Perhaps some people use their iPods for more than just listening to music. The iPod 6th gen has some advantages over an iPhone 4 such as bigger screen, faster processor, and better camera. It's a cheap way to get access to the iOS ecosystem with the performance around the same as an iPhone 6.

I got a new iPod 16GB Gen6 for $100 recently, and I am about to take it back for a refund because the storage is just too small to get involved in the IOS ecosystem in any meaningful way for me. I put a small number of apps and a modest amount of music on the device and it is now almost full - video is not even realistic for me. If you want it for more than just listening to music (or even just for a decent amount of reasonable bit rate music), I would suggest more storage (or a device which allows for microSD).

    Just in before Apple announcement

    • Apple announcement

      Of what?

      • Good question. But, some info here - http://www.macrumors.com/2016/03/10/apple-invites-march-21-e…

Budget iPhone apparently, could rival iPod touch?

        • Rival it in size, yes. There are certainly practical advantages in a phone that you can hold and use with 1 hand.

But there's no way in the world that an iPhone will be anywhere near AUD $179 (or even $300).

  • i suppose i'll try and grab one. even though 16gb storage is a bit on the low side

    • Yes, way too low for me, as per my post above. I think a lot of people will regret having such a small amount of storage.

      • i got a 32gb 6th gen from officeworks for $284. imo, that's better value

        • Or pay less for any number of other music players and/or phones that have more storage and/or allow for microSD expansion.

        • @oz-dave: i don't use my itouch for music. just apps and taking photos

Interesting - I figured most people would buy them for music/video, since they lack some of the features some apps might make use of. But it's good it works for you :-)

@oz-dave: well i'm weird, so there's that ;) for music, i use an ipod nano since it has a pedometer and bluetooth. much prefer the size of the shuffle though.

i have a jailbroken ipod touch 4g which i can pair with a skyroam gmate to make it a 2nd phone.

          @oz-dave:

My son has a iPod Touch 5th Gen, and it is definitely never used for either Music or Video. It's all about Apps, not for a music player.

It's used for pretty much the same things that people use an iPhone for, including talking to friends on Facetime, Skype or whatever. It gets hammered on Musica.ly, Facebook and Instagram.

The primary difference is that the iPod connects via WiFi rather than Cellular, but since it's so small, light and had good battery life it gets used more than his phone.

  • Sold out 2 seconds after 10pm? Hmm…

    • Yep, even the bag with 1800 odd for sale was sold out in 2 seconds.

      • Mine's showing the bag is still available but the iPod is still sold out. Really not sure how people managed to get them when it said sold out straight away..
